About this deal

Fedora is a bleeding edge distro, this is the sort of thing to be expected if you use Fedora ( we have many examples of this sort of thing: systemd, pipewire (or even pulseaudio before it), wayland... XServer 1.1.0, EXA enhancements, KDrive integrated, AIGLX, OS and platform support enhancements. [63]

The X11 protocol design, led by Scheifler, was extensively discussed on open mailing lists on the nascent Internet that were bridged to USENET newsgroups. Gettys moved to California to help lead the X11 development work at WSL from DEC's Systems Research Center, where Phil Karlton and Susan Angebrandt led the X11 sample server design and implementation. X therefore represents one of the first very large-scale distributed free and open source software projects.Applications are partially or fully broken on Wayland. Offhand, the main things I know of are applications not adapted for screencasting through the portal system (like Bluejeans and Webex) and IPKVM software (like Synergy, Barrier/Input-Leap, etc.). This is actively being fixed. KDE has introduced xwaylandvideobridge for the first type of apps and @whot is working on the second type ( in xdg-desktop-portal and input-leap added support) In some applications multipart names are written with spaces, in others joined together, often in camel case. They are usually matched insensitive of case and the X Server source code contains spaced aliases for most entries; this article uses spaces and uppercase initials except where variants with spaces are not specified in the actual code. I mean, this isn't just an update to a DE here but an entire display server, one that still has issues on some cards and setups.

Additionally, there are many features going into KDE Plasma now that are Wayland-only anyway (new features in Spectacle; Kwin's mixed-DPI, VRR, and soon HDR capabilities; etc.). @zzag also started upstream discussion about splitting kwin_x11 out of kwin because it's become increasingly problematic to deal with both all the time. If " color1" is not the same as " color ", the base color is usually darker. That means its brightness in HSB color notation is less than 100%; about 30 of the base colors are fully bright. The four variants (1...4) have rounded brightness values of 100%, 93%, 80% and 55%, respectively. Their hue and saturation are usually the same except for rounding. In some cases they differ from the base color, though, which may indicate that these variants were specified with alternate definitions of the bases in mind, i.e. their values were adapted to a certain monitor which was commonly done by vendors until the 1990s. Dim Gray, 59% Brown 120°/50% 61% Lime Green, 100% Green / Lime 180°/25% 25% Dark Slate Gray, 100% Teal 240°/27% 64% Midnight Blue, 100% Dark Blue Derived lists [ edit ] if we drop X11 sometime later rather than at this boundary, people will be extremely upset with us. a b "The X-Windows Disaster". Art.Net. Archived from the original on 11 November 2009 . Retrieved 10 November 2009.I've been using KDE on Wayland for over a year on 4 different systems and 2 of them Nvidia only with no issues (Specially since Jan and I (as tester) invested time in fixing screen sharing with Nvidia cards) An effect simulated by a window manager by maintaining window position information in a larger coordinate system than the screen and allowing panning by simply moving the windows in response to the user. X provides the basic framework for a GUI environment: drawing and moving windows on the display device and interacting with a mouse and keyboard. X does not mandate the user interface–this is handled by individual programs. As such, the visual styling of X-based environments varies greatly; different programs may present radically different interfaces.

At one time I the task of printing out blue prints stored on microfilm embedded in punch cards: I think F is the largest size I remember seeing on a regular basis but I am almost positive that they go larger than that (I mean in the US Standard Letter Sizes). The Orca project adds accessibility support to the X Window System, including implementing an API ( AT-SPI [7]). This is coupled with GNOME's ATK to allow for accessibility features to be implemented in X programs using the GNOME/GTK APIs. [8] KDE provides a different set of accessibility software, including a text-to-speech converter and a screen magnifier. [9] The other major desktops (LXDE, Xfce and Enlightenment) attempt to be compatible with ATK.

Harris, Mike (13 April 2003). "Another teleconference partial edited transcript". [email protected] (Mailing list). Archived from the original on 12 February 2005 . Retrieved 26 June 2021. The first versions of Mosaic and Netscape Navigator used the X11 colors as the basis for the web colors list, as both were originally X applications. The W3C specifications SVG and CSS level 3 module Color eventually adopted the X11 list with some changes. [7] The present W3C list is a superset of the 16 " VGA colors" defined in HTML 3.2 and CSS level 1.

The term "display" should not be confused with the more specialized jargon " Zaphod display". The latter is a rare configuration allowing multiple users of a single computer to each have an independent set of display, mouse, and keyboard, as though they were using separate computers, but at a lower per-seat cost. By the late 1980s X was, Simson Garfinkel wrote in 1989, "Athena's most important single achievement to date". DEC reportedly believed that its development alone had made the company's donation to MIT worthwhile. Gettys joined the design team for the VAXstation 2000 to ensure that X—which DEC called DECwindows—would run on it, and the company assigned 1,200 employees to port X to both Ultrix and VMS. [22] [23] In 1987, with the success of X11 becoming apparent, MIT wished to relinquish the stewardship of X, but at a June 1987 meeting with nine vendors, the vendors told MIT that they believed in the need for a neutral party to keep X from fragmenting in the marketplace. In January 1988, the MIT X Consortium formed as a non-profit vendor group, with Scheifler as director, to direct the future development of X in a neutral atmosphere inclusive of commercial and educational interests. NVIDIA drivers (since v495~v515) support GBM for Wayland instead of EGLStreams. Wayland is fully supported on current NVIDIA drivers. Recent X releases (since 2014, xorg-rgb version 1.0.6) [10] also support the W3C definitions. In X11, the original definitions have been preserved (so "Dark Gray" remains a darker shade of "Gray"), but for every conflicting name pair, "Web" and additional "X11" prefixes have been added to ease disambiguation after the merger. The "X11" prefix is an alias for the non-prefixed version, i.e. "X11 Gray" = "Gray" ≠ "Web Gray". The W3C also defined a color that is equal to X11's "Green", but called it "Lime". In X11, this is simply called "Lime", as no such name existed before. It aliases to "Green", i.e. "Lime" = "Green" = "X11 Green" ≠ "Web Green". Diavatis, Alex (11 June 2013). I'm not saying we should keep X11 for long - I want it gone just as much as you do - but I just think it'd be a bad move to drop it sooner than the only other Fedora edition that ships both Wayland and X11. Until 2004, XFree86 provided the most common X variant on free Unix-like systems. XFree86 started as a port of X to 386-compatible PCs and, by the end of the 1990s, had become the greatest source of technical innovation in X and the de facto standard of X development. Since 2004, however, the X.Org Server, a fork of XFree86, has become predominant. While X11 had received extensions such as OpenGL support during the 1990s, its architecture had remained fundamentally unchanged during the decade. In the early part of the 2000s, however, it was overhauled to resolve a number of problems that had surfaced over the years, including a "flawed" font architecture, a 2D graphics system "which had always been intended to be augmented and/or replaced", and latency issues. [50] The usage of DisplayPostscript in NeWS (Sun/Sony) meant that the server had a complete and rather nice (Display)Postscript support built in. This support could be expoloited by a client program to run postscript programs directly inside the server. Files: File path names, including font paths. Fonts should've been auto-detected by Xorg -configure, but if you need to add more, you can add a new entry such as fontpath (location).
