Adrian knows this is a lie; a family rumour is that Grandma Sugden once attended a gymkhana and was asked to leave when her face upset the horses. Adrian spends this period living on a crime-ridden council estate with his sons, has an on-off romance with a woman named Pamela Pigg, and temporarily works in a lay-by trailer cafe. Both are often unemployed; they have separated, divorced and remarried several times, often in the wake of extramarital affairs. She later recounted that it was the start of her writing which became the Adrian Mole books, looking at life through the clinical eyes of a teenager but in a comedic manner. These first two books were adapted into a television series, broadcast in 1985 and 1987, and a video game.
