The x4 PCI Express host board can be retained inside chassis by using full-size bracket or a using unique PCI Express add-in board retainer (US Patent 7,850,475). Using partitions rather than all drives is NOT a supported configuration, and will put yourself in trouble if you ever have to replace a drive—potentially in BIG trouble if you were to use these partitions for pool-critical purposes such as "special vdev". Only needing one x16 slot to run cards I may just opt for a dual CPU board and do some CPU mining as well if a new CPU only algorithm triumphs over Cryptonight. I started with a couple of those x1 into 4 USB cards which kinda worked if I was running less than 6 total GPUs and no more than 2 cards on each splitter.Since PCI lanes are separate and are backward compatible, can a PCI-E x16 slot be utilized by a splitter that has an x16 connector that uses 4 separate X4 lanes for 4 different nvme SSDs? Having more PCIe slots means getting the opportunity to install more expansion cards for various uses. They are also great when installing multiple smaller cards like a network adapter, sound card, USB or SATA expansion cards, etc. Now I know EVGA wouldn't include it if it was junk, but still, do I really need to swap out it to two separate cables(or 3), for the 3080?

Well, I do intend to use NFS for network sharing, and I've found myself quite often annoyed that transferring small files over my current network setup takes much longer than I have the patience for. It's a waste to be using 16 lanes of pci bandwidth for a graphics card I hardly use, and I've found some convenient front panel usb 3. cards take up very little space at the actual pci-e slot as the cards main board is in the front panel unit. While it is always wise to invest in a motherboard that meets your requirements from the start, if you do not have the budget to procure a new one, then PCIe splitters can help you.You might get lucky and be able to mount it to the case, but that would probably assume a full (or at least mini or micro) ATX case. We have seen tests that the x8 even (shown by Linus with SLI 980s way back and shown by Gamers Nexus in single slot) has enough bandwidth to hold x16 performance. The Splitter includes a MiniPCI Express Adapter board with a PCI Express flat cable (up to 2 boards), and MiniPCI Express host board.

A graphics card that didn't take up the whole x16 slot might be acceptable if it's possible to use the last channel at the same time for a 1x riser or something, don't know if that's allowed.
