About this deal

This course is suitable for Speech and Language Therapists, Class Teachers, curriculum co-ordinators, specialist teachers, Head teachers, SENCOs and Educational Psychologists. It details a comprehensive and structured approach to learning with a multitude of activities and lesson plans. It adopts a whole school approach but is equally effective for specific classes and groups or individual learners. It is an effective tool to teach children who speak English as an additional language. It particularly suitable for Key Stages 1 and 2. We began by introducing the STAR literacy approach. The Select, Teach, Activate, Review process meant that we chose words from the class text, we then taught and activated them using a range of Word Aware strategies and then built in review time to enable the children to develop a secure understanding of these words. It is taken from the brand new edition of Word Aware 1: Teaching Vocabulary Across the Day, Across the Curriculum by Stephen Parsons and Anna Brannigan and provides you with a chance to take a look inside this much loved resource.

When reviewing progress within our school, we felt that many of our children had poor language skills and limited understanding of vocabulary. This was particularly evident when children moved into Key Stage 2 when it became clear that, although they could read and decode well, they couldn’t explain word meanings. Consequently this had an impact on their ability to understand more complex texts.Book 1: Teaching Vocabulary across the Day, across the Curriculum (age suitability: 5-11+) – Second Edition – Sep 2021 Find it- before or even after reading a book with your child identify words they might not understand, write them down and ask them to find it in the story, can they then use the clues and their reading skills to work out what it means. They could use a dictionary to find the meaning or look in a thesaurus to find words with similar meanings. Consultative support, including coaching and class demonstrations, can be arranged following your training to help you get off to a flying start! Touch, taste and smell– take every opportunity to describe sensory experiences. Ask them to describe it to you, try to encourage them to use more detailed words than nice or bad, such as rough or sweet. Treasure Hunt– on the way to and from school, look for things you could describe by a particular word like shrivelled or spiky. Categories such as living things, things with circles, things with engines. Word Aware is a fast-paced, fun and interactive workshop style day, which will leave participants well equipped to start Word Aware in their schools or with individual students.
