About this deal

The population of this lovely bird is sadly declining, although they are not yet a species of concern. This bird breeds only in southern Costa Rica and western Panama, making habitat loss a grave threat. This splendid species features a bright Royal Blue head, and a pure white underbelly creating an almost hand painted look. At about 5 inches, it’s a rather large hummingbird. The Jacobin favors wet lowlands and foothills on both the Caribbean and Pacific sides of Costa Rica.

Laguna del Lagarto Lodge comprises 500 protected hectares that can be toured in different ways, by foot, by horse or by boat, and each trip will leave you with a great impression. Hotel Savegre is a lovely mountain lodge set within its own private reserve within the Talamanca Mountain Range. Travel over the highest peaks in Costa Rica, through the paramo, and into a gorgeous valley of white oak trees and lush forests to one of the richest birding areas in Costa Rica. This very handsome Woodcreeper has a slender, decurved, pale bill, and a very noticeable spotted crown. This bird favors the Talamanca Mountains and older Oak forests. The foremost objective of The Birds of Costa Rica is to help anyone to correctly and confidently identify the Costa Rica birds. And it succeeds. This is the one field guide the novice or experienced birder needs for identifying birds in the field in the diverse habitats found in Costa Rica."If you are looking for a good field guide for your trip, the consensus seems to be that The Birds of Costa Rica: A Field Guide and Photo Guide to Birds of Costa Rica are your best book options. We own the first book and I am not a huge fan of how it is organized, but Thomas (who is way more into birds and photography than I am) likes it a lot. Conclusion The station is also home to the Wilson Botanical Garden – the most famous botanical garden in Central America. The garden features beautifully diverse plantings of tropical and subtropical ornamental plants, representatives of unusual plant families, and rare and endangered plants from Costa Rica and elsewhere. Their coloring is metallic bronze-green above and cinnamon below, slightly paler on the chin and upper throat.

Imagine a place hidden in a dense jungle forest along the Caribbean Sea, a quasi-island surrounded by the ocean and canals. You can only get there by boat. The procellariids are the main group of medium-sized "true petrels", characterized by united nostrils with medium septum and a long outer functional primary. The Park is also a principal wintering ground for many neotropical migrants, including hummingbirds, flycatchers, warblers, tanagers, orioles, vireos, owls, and falcons. The oilbird is a slim, long-winged bird distantly related to the nightjars. It is nocturnal and a specialist feeder on the fruit of the oil palm.

Further space is saved by not covering 27 pelagic seabirds that you are very unlikely to see anyway. However I think it is a shame that space was not given to the three vulnerable endemics found on the small uninhabited Costa Rican island of Cocos which lies 500 km to the south. Few people get to see these species but it would have been good to show them, even if just to raise awareness of them with the authorities. For birders, this area has an added significance – besides the birds that fly in the aviary and visit the hummingbird garden, Peace Lodge is also in a migration corridor that is used by hundreds of species as they head north or south in search of fruit-bearing trees. Must-See: the La Paz Aviary for Toucans & the Hummingbird Garden Whether you choose to explore cloud forests, dry forests, mangroves, coastal jungles, volcanoes or mountains, you’ll find birding opportunities in every treetop. There are a few species of motmots in Costa Rica, of which the Blue-Crowned Motmot is the most common.

8- Las Cruces Biological Station

Despite its name, this species is neither a wren nor a thrush, and is not closely related to either family. It was moved from the New World warblers (Parulidae) and placed in its own family in 2017. It offers cabins at mid-range prices, along with a swimming pool, hiking trails, butterfly garden and an 8-cable zipline. The beach is a 10-minute walk from the lodge. The eleven comfortable and elegant rooms, some of which are newly refurbished, each have their own character and individuality. All rooms are en suite, with showers or baths and some can accommodate families of up to four people. These small birds occasionally get caught in an unbelievable predicament. Due to their size, they can become entangled in the large webs of orb weaver spiders. Unfortunately, they aren’t strong enough to break out of the web and often die trying to free themselves.
