About this deal

A young family’s safe world is turned upside down when war arrives,causing turmoil in their lives and forcing them to flee in search of safety. Told through the eyes of one of the children, the story follow their journey across hills and through forests, over enormous walls and stormy seas, encountering things both wondrous and scary in their search for a new home. children write a book review of the book, mentioning the name of the author/illustrator, summarising the story and explaining what they liked and didn’t like about it;

From the author: The Journey is actually a story about many journeys, and it began with the story of two girls I met in a refugee center in Italy. After meeting them I realized that behind their journey lay something very powerful. So I began collecting more stories of migration and interviewing many people from many different countries. A few months later, in September 2014, when I started studying a Master of Arts in Illustration at the Academy of Lucerne, I knew I wanted to create a book about these true stories. Almost every day on the news we hear the terms "migrants" and "refugees" but we rarely ever speak to or hear the personal journeys that they have had to take. This book is a collage of all those personal stories and the incredible strength of the people within them.

Haunting illustrations chronicle one refugee family’s harrowing escape from the darkness of war. A tale of love, courage, and perseverance.” Sanna met refugee children and combined their stories to create this brilliant book told from a child’s perspective – but with an awareness of an adult’s perspective too. […] The story has darkness, and fear, and worry, and shows the heartbreaking decisions families have to make when they’re trying to stay alive. There are also moments of strength and hope.”

Chilling, haunting, and hopeful, this book will resonate with readers long after they’ve closed the cover.” Through beautiful and powerful illustrations, The Journey vividly explores the universal story of all those who have had to leave behind the place and people they love.” startling, poignant […] It’s a story that has lingered in my mind since I first read it, and I think it will be there a long while.” Introducing a comprehensive teaching unit centered around the captivating text, “The Journey” by Francesca Sanna. This 5-week writing unit is thoughtfully designed to engage students and broaden their understanding of the refugee experience. An honest and engaging portrait of what a refugee family goes through to get to a safe place to live.”

the story ends without telling us if the family find a safe life and where they go. Why do you think the author ends the story this way? Do you like this ending? can you imagine having to leave your home. your friends and your country. How would you feel? What would you take? especially for younger children: what does the word journey mean? Does the word mean/imply a short trip or travelling for a long time?

Sanna’s prose is lyrical yet sparse enough to emphasize the harsh and abrupt changes that the family experiences, and she has created a beautiful interplay of words and pictures. […] All of the illustrations are beautifully layered and textured with color, pattern, and meaning. I know there are 'humans' out there hate immigrant or refugee, maybe not hate but don't want them in their 'own' country, I know their (immigrant or refugee) negative influences, I do have some complaints as well, and I do know politics let and keep these people suffer, or die. The Journey offers a beautiful message to readers — young and old alike — about the difficulties of finding a new home, and the value of welcoming strangers once they arrive.”children write about how they felt when listening to the story and illustrate their work. What part of the story made them feel that way? Why? The Journey] is a brightly colored and beautifully illustrated tale on a dark and frightening topic. […] The contrasting pictures and words are likely to inspire conversation, asking children and adults alike to discuss the topic of conflict and the plight of refugees the world over. I’d highly recommend the use of this book in an educational setting. Francesca Sanna is an illustrator to keep an eye on.”

This is a beautiful illustrated children's book which is all about how it feels to be forced out of your country and to become a refugee. The story is told with small amounts of text accompanied by vast sprawling imagery and the images help to represent some of the fears, excitement and emotions which accompany the journey... the this book is suggested for 3-6-year-olds but I suggest using it for children aged up to 12 and even older; This lesson can be modified for use with younger children but is best suited to children in Years 3-6.

the graphical illustrations are powerful and unusual and engaging, for older children and for adults, as well as for younger children; This teaching sequence spans approximately 26 sessions, providing ample opportunities for educators to teach advanced reading and writing skills through an evocative and challenging text. The vivid illustrations encourage reader response and reflection on complex themes, allowing for in-depth exploration of sensitive content and inspiring creative, authentic responses. The book’s inspiration came when author and illustrator Francesca Sanna met two girls in a refugee centre in Italy. She then began interviewing more refugee families in Europe, and created this book as a tribute to their plight and strength. the family initially flees in their car, then travels by getting lifts with other people, on foot, by ferry and finally by train;
