About this deal

Designed with safety in mind, the portable heater has a handy 12 hour timer, automatic cool-down function and a thermal cut out device. As such, the Ideal Home team has tried and tested bestselling electric heaters from all of the leading brand names to help you find the right one for you. We've reviewed indoor heaters from Duux, Dreo, Russell Hobbs, Beldray and many more, including comparing the performance of both convector and fan heaters. As convector heaters are slower to heat up from cold, it can be worthwhile to look for one with a timer so you can set it to come on before you want to use a room. Their added bonus is that whilst the warmth tends to disappear the minute you turn a fan or halogen heater off, with a convector heater the warmth lingers for much longer. I found the heat the Duux Edge provided was instant but gentle, and can be felt about a metre above from being turned on. As it's a convector heater, it did take a while for the heat to diffuse throughout the space as there's no fan to push the warmth instantly into the room, but the upside is that this heater throws out warmth for a good length of time even after it's turned off. I also liked the fact that the Edge enabled me to set my desired temperature down to the exact degree. Beat the cold with the Beldray Handy Plug-In heater, a must-have in any home. Featuring a ceramic heating element, choose between two speed settings and set the adjustable thermostat between 15 and 30°C to create your desired temperature. Change the direction of the heat using the 90° swivel plug design and alter the settings using the LED display and controls. Designed with safety in mind, the heater has a 12 hour timer, cool-touch case, automatic cool-down function and thermal cut-out device.

The next step for us was to look at all of the products that fall within the Heaters and radiators category, of which we found 55 products at Argos. So we pulled together all of the prices of these products to analyse the average prices as well as finding the cheapest and most expensive options. The controls themselves consist of an on-off switch and three buttons; a plus and minus button for raising and lowering the desired temperature (within a 15-30°C range), and a Mode button for changing the fan speed, alongside an LED display. I found the controls a little difficult to navigate as they aren't marked very clearly, and the operating instructions left a lot to be desired, with the instructional manual not always describing the functionality accurately. You’ll definitely need the instruction manual to hand for setting the heater's timer, as it’s not obvious how to do this without it. In short, ease of use is where this electric heater falls down compared to some of the others I’ve reviewed, in particular the super simple Beldray Flatbed fan heater which was refreshingly hassle-free.

One customer said: "We have used it in the bathroom and the kitchen, it's really good for a short blast of heat to take the chill off. We closed the bathroom door and within five minutes we had a lovely warm bathroom. We had it near our legs at the kitchen table - nice and warm. We haven't needed to put the heating on yet." The brand of product you buy can vary in importance, from person to person. Some people will of course be much more particular about the brands they will use. Whilst others aren’t interested in the brand and are more interested in the overall quality or price of the product itself. Thankfully BELDRAY is a brand that many customers have grown to love over the years and is very popular for items in the Heaters and radiators category.

Performance At first, I found the reach of the Russell Hobbs 700W Ceramic Plug In Heater to be limited – I found I got about a three metre range of direct heat after the heater had been running 10 minutes or so. However, when left running for about half an hour, the heat diffused around a metre further, warming the whole 15 sqm room after about 45 minutes. This is no mean feat considering I was pushing the heater a bit beyond its capacity; it's designed to be used in a 10sqm area. In fact, considering this compact heater is far smaller and less powerful than all the other heaters I tested, I was really impressed by its performance. Design The Beldray Flatbed Portable Fan Heater is functional rather than stylish. When compared to the other heaters I tested, it stands out as the most basic looking, but given its price point – at normal retail price it just pips the Russell Hobbs 700W Ceramic Plug In Heater to being the cheapest heater in our round-up – its ease of use, and performance, this is easily overlooked. If you're using an electric heater over a long period of time, then a convector heater will probably be the most economical to run. Some only use 1kW of power on maximum – compared to 1.5-1.8kW of some fan heaters – and even the ones that use 2-3kW have the advantage that they’ll carry on warming your space even after they’re turned off. Halogen heaters: Halogen heaters use an incandescent light bulb that creates infrared heat i.e. it heats objects rather than the air, meaning that you’ll feel the warmth almost instantly. This type of heat is known as radiant. Because of how they work, they’re ideal for warming people sat close to the heater, but less effective in larger rooms, or if you're at a distance from the heater.

The next step after looking at products in the same category, was to look at products from the same brand, BELDRAY. The next step was to try and narrow down our search even more. So we’ve already looked the prices of products in the Heaters and radiators category. Then we’ve also looked at the prices of products from BELDRAY. So this step combines the two and looks specifically at the price you’d expect to pay for BELDRAY branded products in the Heaters and radiators category. If the brand you buy is important to you, our best advice is to spend some time writing up your own list of ideal brands. That way when you come to the point where you’re comparing product options you can filter to only show the products from brands in your list. One stand-out design feature is the fact it can be used in two positions, either sat vertically or laid horizontally. The controls – consisting of two dials with an indicator light between – are well placed on one side, so they can be accessed from both standing positions. The dual positioning means you have a little more control over the flow of hot air, although there's no oscillation with this basic fan heater.

It could be a great investment for those working from home through the winter months, university students who want to warm up their halls of residence, or anybody who simply wants to keep their central heating costs to a minimal this year.In the manual, it states: "The plug-in heater is fitted with a thermal safety cut-off device, built in to prevent it from overheating. Should the plug-in heater start to overheat, the thermal safety cut-out system will automatically operate and the heat setting will switch off." My garden office measures just under 15sqm and is where I work day-to-day, so it was the perfect place to test out how toasty each space heater could make an otherwise unheated room. However, if you have a larger space to heat, or are planning on running the heater for long periods of time, the Duux Edge 1000 Smart Convector Heater was a close runner up. It's slower to warm a room, but once warmed the heat stays around for longer, potentially making it more energy efficient over the long term, and it can slowly but surely heat a large space of up to 20sqm. Which type of heater is cheapest to run? Noise levels There’s no stated dB for this heater but it’s not terribly noisy when running. The high fan speed has more of a whine, so if you find it obtrusive, the lower speed may be more suitable. Designed with safety in mind, the portable heaters have a 12-hour timer, automatic cool-down function and a thermal cut out device.
