About this deal

At this time, I was struggling from Pure O OCD and my old therapist didn't know what Pure O OCD is, so I was getting the wrong treatment. It does not relent in heightened circumstances, in school or work or church, during exams or funerals or sex—because such circumstances only make you more vulnerable to its disruptive powers. It also tackled about the causes of having these thoughts and the assurance that these are just thoughts. One reads this book with the sense that the author has a depth of clinical experience allowing him to state, in clearly understandable language, the key elements in obsessional thinking about which sufferers are concerned.

He confides to us that everything went well for several years after that: his crime had not been discovered, and he had, to all intents and purposes, got away with it. The idea that ‘we act, for the reason that we should not’ prefigures the idea of negative psychology, but Poe’s story as a whole can be said to foreshadow Sigmund Freud’s description of the role of the id in the unconscious mind. Verbal or physical abuse…Public humiliation…Religious blasphemy…Human waste or other bodily products…Transgression of sexual taboo (incest, pedophilia, bestiality)…Graphic mutilation of the face, eyes, or genitals…How an object in the room, perhaps one you are holding in your hands, could be utilized as an instrument for violence, torture, or sexual assault…A prolonged and agonizing death.

But out of this our cloud upon the precipice's edge, there grows into palpability, a shape, far more terrible than any genie, or any demon of a tale, and yet it is but a thought, although a fearful one, and one which chills the very marrow of our bones with the fierceness of the delight of its horror. The Imp of Perverse visits every one of us from time to time, with two possible outcomes: (1) We give the thoughts little attention and no credence and go on with our lives, or (2) we are strongly affected by the bad thoughts, so that the thoughts occur frequently during the day and interfere with our functioning socially or at work. Imagine that you are committing this act and that you are somehow powerless to stop yourself, even though you are horrified by your action. No mother wants to admit to having thoughts of killing her child, no boyfriend wants to admit to having thoughts of stabbing his girlfriend so unfortunately they live a life of trying to repress these thoughts, thinking they are evil people that will one day snap and commit these atrocious acts.

Every human being is visited from time to time by the Imp of the Perverse, who makes you think the most inappropriate thoughts at the most appropriate times. You’ll sometimes hear OCD experts cite studies that show virtually everybody has intrusive thoughts (the foundation of OCD; essentially the “O” part). Some intrusive thoughts sound totally irrational: “Just a glance at the wagging tail was enough to start the bad thoughts—he felt compelled to stare at the dog’s anus and his thoughts would start,” and, “[S]he thinks about how easy it would be to throw her defenseless Jessie against a wall and smash her skull. It honestly strikes me as tragic that intrusive thoughts about harm inevitably target either ourselves or the people closest to us; those we love and most fear harming: Parents, siblings, romantic partners, spouses, children and grandchildren (especially in the case of the many mothers [41% of those with postpartum depression] who experience these thoughts for the first time about their child). I learned a few new things about OCD - he explains the difference between CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy) and ER/P (exposure response/prevention) clearly, and shows how each works better for different people. What made me really enjoy this was that the book wasn't pretentious in just telling you the scientific views. I hope this column will help non-sufferers empathize with and support loved ones who struggle with this easily misunderstood, and yet frequently devastating, mental illness. This is the moment when the sufferer is well and truly ensnared by the insidious logic of the intrusive thoughts of OCD.

There’s a cliché about icebergs and their tips—but a better analogy might be the maw of a carnivorous plant, with its spoiled-wine stench and needlepoint thorns. These thoughts are often of a “taboo” nature (sex, violence, morality), and the compulsions are anything that is done (or avoided) to try to make the thoughts go away. When does an "obsessive" thought become a "bad thought" and who decides this and when can an "obsessive" thought be simply and safely labelled a "special interest " and therefore not something to be concerned about. Recommended reading for anyone working in mental health fields as well as those in post-partum care. Some obsessive thoughts may strike the reader as innocuous, even comical: “When he was an adolescent—although he was heterosexual—the worst thing [he] could think of was being gay, which could cause relentless teasing… he would find himself scanning his body to try to feel certain that he wasn’t sexually aroused.
