Meanwhile, Daemon and Rhaenyra privately marry in the Old Valyrian tradition to perpetuate the pure Targaryen bloodline. After faking his death, Laenor secretly flees Driftmark with Ser Qarl. The author of A Song of Ice and Fire, George R. R. Martin, said in November 2018 that a “possible spin-off series would be solidly founded on material in Fire & Blood.” They find King Viserys is bedridden, disfigured, and mentally muddled. Queen Alicent and Ser Otto Hightower now oversee all royal business. Rhaenyra appoints Ser Criston to the Kingsguard despite various suggestions from both Otto and Lord Commander Ser Harrold Westerling.

The series is set during King Viserys I Targaryen’s reign, 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones, and it eventually leads to the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. The project is a revision of the Game of Thrones writer Bryan Cogman’s officially passed-up spin-off plan. Meanwhile, Corlys, his brother Vaemond, and Daemon, accompanied by several House Velaryon soldiers, fight an uphill battle against the Triarchy warriors. Rhaenyra travels to Storm’s End, where, with Lord Boremund Baratheon’s guidance, she meets and rejects countless suitors. Aegon resists being king, but Alicent persuades him otherwise. King’s Landing citizens are herded into the Dragonpit to witness Aegon’s coronation. Princess Rhaenys, refusing to support Aegon as king, is held captive but eventually freed by Erryk. Alicent’s lady-in-waiting, Tayla, is secretly providing Daemon’s former mistress, Mysaria, with information.The king dismisses Ser Otto as his Hand, feeling Otto has always manipulated him for his own personal gain. The king sends Grand Maester Mellos to give Rhaenyra a precautionary abortifacient tea. To continue the true Valaryon lineage, Princess Rhaenys urges that Lord Corlys pass his title through their granddaughter, Baela, claiming Laenor did not sire Rhaenyra’s children. Ser Qarl appears to murder Laenor, with Rhaenys and Corlys believing a charred body is their son’s. During old king Jaehaerys Targaryen’s reign, fatal tragedies took his two eldest sons, Princes Aemon and Baelon, leaving the succession undecided.

Six months after Rhaenyra’s anointing as heir, Daemon occupies Dragonstone and retains the City Watch’s loyalty while Prince-Admiral Craghas Drahar menaces the Stepstones at the behest of the Triarchy. Martin and Ryan Condal serve as co-creators on the series. Miguel Sapochnik and Condal are showrunners, and the pair also serve as executive producers along with Martin, Sara Hess, Jocelyn Diaz, Vince Gerardis and Ron Schmidt. Clare Kilner and Geeta Vasant Patel also direct the series. Greg Yaitanes is director and co-executive producer. Game of Thrones and Westworld composer Ramin Djawadi scored the series. To soothe family tensions, Rhaenyra proposes Jacaerys marry Helaena, Alicent’s daughter, which Alicent rejects. Ser Lyonel Strong offers his resignation as Hand of the King. Viserys refuses it, but permits Lyonel to escort the disgraced Harwin to Harrenhal. King Viserys plans a great hunt to celebrate his and pregnant Queen Alicent’s son Aegon’s second birthday. Rhaenyra feels neglected by the king due to the attention heaped on her younger half-brother.Ser Gerold Royce confronts Daemon, claiming he murdered his cousin, Lady Rhea. Daemon denies it and demands he inherit his wife’s property.
