First, I’d never seen a game that really implemented colour theory in a way I found fun. Second, with two teenagers in the house, I had a desire to find a game that would appeal to not only them and us, but also their grandparents.

No – Hues and Cues went through at least seven major iterations. It began as a card game and stayed that way for quite some time. It wasn’t until the fifth version that I added a board. That was after remembering there might be manufacturing issues trying to get card #1 to match card #150 perfectly every time.

Can the whole family enjoy Hues and Cues?

If there is a tie, you will play additional rounds until one of the tied players take the lead by themselves. In these additional rounds the tied players cannot be the cue giver. So instead of describing a color as “yellow”, you might say, “butter”. (Using the words “lighter” and “darker” are off-limits as well.) This is a great game to play for mixed ages… elementary-aged kids and their grandparents can enjoy this game together. While the box says “ages 8 & up”, younger kids can also have fun with this. It just depends on the child’s ability to associate colors with things they’ve seen. A color game for the classroom For early finishers or free choice time Hues and Cues is played over a number of rounds. The number of rounds depends on the number of players. If there are three to six players, each player will be the cue giver twice. If there are seven or more players, each player will be the cue giver once. Fantastic. So presumably then, at some point, you looked at Hues and Cues and thought: this idea should see the light of day… This is good enough to show people. How did that happen? To whom did you pitch it?

We also had numerous situations where the first round of player markers were significantly off from where the Cue-giver intended. There was plenty of ‘what were you thinking’ going on every time that happened. With those more abstract cues, that’s bound to happen. Overall, this visually appealing color game would make a great addition to any game collection or a fun gift for almost anyone. Hues and Cues will help both kids and adults become more aware of the colors all around them, and mindful of the subtle differences between similar colors. I think it’s natural for someone to assume a person who experiences some type of colour blindness can’t play a game about colour. Hues and Cues is most likely the only colour-based game which can be played by those with a colour deficiency without additional symbology or other assistance. After all of the players have placed their second guess on the board, the game proceeds to scoring.

We have yet to play with players who are colorblind, so we don’t know what they’ll think of the game. But we could only imagine it would be tough. Overall despite a few minor quibbles Hues and Cues has proven to be a great game for our game groups. I’m personally not a big fan of party games and due to that I don’t own a lot of them, but I’m happy to add Hues and Cues to that small collection. Not sure what game to buy next? Buy Premium Box » This is because the Cue-giver gets a point for every marker within the interior boundaries of the scoring rig. This is a maximum of nine points. If the maximum number of points a guesser can get is 3 points with a single marker, initiating the scoring after a single cue can limit the points gained by the other players. For maximum enjoyment, I’m going to go out on a limb and recommend modifying the rules a bit, though. I offer some “situation-specific” modifications below. How to modify the rules

After launching his first game at New York Toy Fair, Scott Brady talks ideas, colours – and trading on the Moon. The other players score points depending on where their cones are in relation to the scoring frame. Guessing the exact square is worth 3 points. Each cone within the frame but not in the exact center scores 2 points. And each cone adjacent to the frame on the outside scores 1 point.

You might also consider allowing two-word clues right from the start, or even allowing a longer description. Again, it’s really up to you and what will make it the most fun for whoever is playing. It really is okay to adapt the rules when you need to… after all, it’s just a game! Some things to consider Surprisingly, the colors on the cards don’t always perfectly match the colors on the game board. For a game where the whole point is to match colors, this seems like a big miss. I’m hoping for better quality control in their next printing. But it’s just a game, so I try to not take it too seriously and just focus on what it does well! You can place your second piece on any space on the gameboard that doesn’t already have another piece on it. For their two word cue the cue giver choose to say “Easter grass”. After receiving the two word cue, the players make their second guess at the round’s color. Scoring in Hues and Cues Each player chooses a color of playing pieces. You will take the three pieces of the color you chose. Giving the perfect clue to describe exactly the shade you are aiming for can feel especially rewarding.
