About this deal

Best practice for this type of lube is to apply sparingly to each link in the chain and wipe off any excess before riding. As the wax melts, the chain will sink into it and warm up. This loosens the metal parts, helping wax to penetrate inside the chain, where it’s needed most. Simon von Bromley / Immediate Media Of all the current staff members at BikeRadar – a bigger bunch of bike nerds you are unlikely to find anywhere – I’m the only person who goes all-in on immersive waxing. The lubes are decanted into a beaker before being tested to allow them to de-gas, but that can mean that waxy and oily lubes can’t really be directly compared. But still, XCP stood out as having a truly brilliant wear protection level, actually matching that of gear oil.

Lower numbers are best in this graph showing the results of the IP 239 four-ball anti-wear; the performance of the XCP is truly outstanding.Dry Lubricants: This type will dry after application and resists contaminants to keep the chain very clean. However, it doesn’t lubricate as well and needs more applications, leading to more waste. It also isn’t water resistant in most cases. With 55 lubes reviewed, including gear oil and chainsaw oil, we’ve also employed the services of a leading lubrication testing lab to ensure this is the most detailed and trust-worthy test you’ll ever see… The FinishLine Ceramic was completely useless - like running an unlubed chain. It's pretty much all solvent. If you do a wet ride, the chain will need re-waxing (or at least cleaning and drying) immediately to prevent corrosion from forming. The main barrier to entry is that it’s a hassle, especially during the initial chain cleaning part (much more on this later).

If your bike has an expensive groupset (and all bike parts are getting more expensive these days), this could save you a significant amount of money in long-term running costs. What kit do you need to wax a bike chain? What has earned this chain wax such notoriety is its high protection, no matter the conditions. It prevents the chain from building up rust, even in the rain and humid weather. It also reduces wear and can handle some high-pressure stuff. When most cyclists think about lubrication, they likely think about decreasing friction and increasing efficiency. It’s not all about efficiency though, friction and drivetrain wear are closely associated too. As things stand, immersive waxing or waxed-based chain lubes are best. The efficiency and cleanliness make them clear leaders in this category.

With the Du-Pont chain saver, there is relatively no fling. It’s about the same as the Castrol and the Maxima when it comes to fling but it’s less noticeable and much easier to clean off. When it comes to performance it’s much better, when you’re spinning the tire you can feel there is a lot less resistance. First of all, it makes sense to use a chain cleaner spray and a special chain cleaning brush to clean your motorcycle’s chain before you lube it. Drivetrain efficiency describes how much of the energy (usually described as ‘power’ because it can be measured in watts) you put through the pedals reaches the rear wheel, to drive you and the bike forward. I have used lots of cans of Maxima and only had one can that was faulty so a much better result over time.

Some lubricants are also sold as aerosols, but we wouldn’t recommend these for lubricating chains because they’re very difficult to apply precisely. Maxima Chain Wax is a solid wax that comes in a can. It’s easy to apply – just spray it on and wipe off the excess with a rag. And it does a great job of protecting your chain from dirt and grime. You should be interested in cleaning and lubricating your motorcycle chain if you have a chain final drive on your bike and you’re interested in helping your motorcycle chain last for a really long time. The factory grease can be hard to completely remove from the inside of even a brand new chain. You need strong degreasers or solvents to get the job done properly, and you’ll be left with a fair amount of waste chemicals that you’ll need to dispose of carefully. With that in mind, avoiding a contaminated drivetrain is key to optimum efficiency and ensuring long-lasting parts.

Once the chain links have been broken in, the chain can be re-installed on your bike. After 10 minutes of easy riding, your chain will be buttery smooth. Simon Bromley / Immediate Media Step 4 – Re-wax every 300-400km or after a wet rideStrange people that they are, most want to spend their free time riding bikes, not lubricating chains, and therefore prefer lubricant options that require a minimum of up-front work. According to Molten Speed Wax, the temperature of the wax should not exceed 93 degrees celsius / 200 degree fahrenheit, both for safety and performance reasons.
