There are not many characters in Fosse’s Septology, but those that do appear all seem to have doppelgangers or doubles in some way. There is the obvious doubling of Asle and his namesake, but other characters like Asle’s mysterious lover, Guro, his neighbor Åsleik and his late wife Alse seem to occupy multiple bodies who often share similar or identical names. At times, this can feel confusing, especially if you are hoping for a clear-cut narrative, but Fosse’s ambiguity shows how life repeats itself. No one is really, truly distinctive in their struggles or circumstances in Fosse’s world, but their soul or their spirit is what makes them unique. “I think that I, what’s I in me, can never die because it was never born,” Asle says, creating a stark distinction between his body and his soul, which always actively seems like it is in the process of becoming.
