About this deal

If you want to be the ruler of a galaxy, you have to get things done. What’s more, you have to ensure you can do the job of taking over the galaxy. If that doesn’t sound like a challenge, then Interstellar Space: Genesisis your game. Fortunately for you, we’ve done the research and will be your guide. Now, let’s eXplore the best 4x board games. Clash of Cultures At the start of the game all Systems (hexes) are unexplored, except for each player's Homeworld. If a unit (ship) lands on an unexplored space it must explore that system and apply any effects immediately. Stand-alone App to run a single Human Player either in Multiplay, or in the Solo games vs Doomsday Machine or Alien Empires Impulse uses an interesting mechanic in which players use a shared card pool in addition to their hands. Players will need to balance adding cards that are beneficial to them, while simultaneously trying to hinder their opponents.

Players are able to build up their technology using an interesting mix of worker placement and economic building. Players can supplement their economy by using their peons to help build and produce resources since they won’t be able to do all of that eXploring and eXterminating if they’re at home working. There are multiple scenarios for both solitaire and 2-players. Multi-player scenarios have the option for team play, including 2 players against 1 in a 3-player game. Scenarios can be customized in length and some can be completed in as little as an hour. Many aspects of the game can be completed simultaneously by the players so that there is very little downtime. This is a game that can be completed in one sitting!' When you meet rival races, you’ll have to decide how to “handle them.” There’s the diplomatic approach or the turn-based space battles approach! Be warned that this rule can lead to seemingly counter-intuitive retreats, which are perfectly legal: an enemy fleet CAN retreat towards one of your colonies if that square is at least the same distance from one of the retreating party's colonies. To stop this you may try to surround embattled hexes with weak or even non-military units (such as decoys, miners or scouts) which will prevent enemy forces retreating into their square. Great strategic depth, but if you like asymmetrical powers, races and abilities (and role playing!) , you may want to look elsewhere. This is a barebones fight to the death!Once completed, they’re done and you can move on to the next. This creates plenty of opportunities for players to change up the traditional 4X strategy. You’ll see more hit-and-run tactics and once the objective is complete you don’t need to hold on to it for the whole game. The best 4X board game with a short playtime While most 4X board games are infamous for their hours-long length, Tiny Epic Kingdoms presents a distilled version of the genre. | Image credit: Gamelyn Games Despite its use of meager cardboard pieces, it is not the fact that the material is “cheaper” that makes the game not quite as good as some others. It is only when things start spilling over that one begins to notice the “limitation”, which is not the fact that the pieces are cardboard, but rather , the game needs a little more space to play to its optimal potential and be viewed in the best possible way. Add to that a planet named “Arcturus” (Mensk?!) and you have a game that feels like it plays out like the classic video game!

Allows you to play Space Empires as a 6-player game without Replicators or a 7-player game with them. There are a lot of space-themed games on this list, so if you’re feeling more of a fantasy vibe, Runewars will have you conquering in style. A Base is a defensive unit designed to protect a Colony. Only 1 base may be built per incoming-producing Colony (ie: not a brand new Colony) and it cannot move or retreat. A Base does not require a Ship Yard to be built. Does not have a maintenance cost. Space Empires 4X is a game in the 4X empire-building genre ( eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, eXterminate) for one to four players. To win, you must destroy your opponent's Homeworld. The game board is made up of hexes representing areas of space, and most game pieces are represented by square counters (aka chits or tokens). All die rolls in the game are done with 10-sided dice, where the "0" face equals 10. Beginners should start with the Basic Rules. It brings a breath of fresh air to the genre with solid mechanics in a fantasy setting. What we Liked:

Book-keeping could have been aided if Space Empires had a proper notation system like chess. Ships have it (each unit is represented by two distinct letters), yet technologies do not. The Production sheet is not ideally formatted, thus there is neither as much space nor is it easy to write down exhaustively what your production was in both ships and technology. This is however imperative for a post game analysis, something that most of the gamers playing Space Empires are bound to do for the sheer enjoyment of it. It would have also helped for those who wished to continue the same game in a coming session, yet who can't afford to keep the game lying on their gaming table. The game itself offers plenty of strategic opportunities and it’s on the simpler side for rules. It’s perfect for family game night. Although direct confrontation is built-in, it isn’t 100% necessary for victory. What we Liked:

March Of The Ants brings a delightful twist to the 4X genre with its ant colony theme, offering a refreshing break from the usual space battles. The nod to classic games like SimAnt adds a layer of nostalgia, and the game strikes a great balance between strategy and accessibility. Perfect for introducing the younger generation to 4X games during family game nights. What could be better: The original game seemingly had its loose ends tied up when the war between factions was approaching a diplomatic solution. But due to division in the ranks, and critical power players losing some of their control, rebellions have awoken to change the game. The game encourages the loser to give up if they know they are losing, and doesn’t highlight the need to make them suffer if they know things are going poorly. A better use of time is to just declare a victor and play another game as a better use of time! After each player chooses a Homeworld location, their remaining Home System counters are randomly placed face-down, and the rest of the board, known as Deep Space, is populated randomly with face-down counters. Space Empires I is the first chapter of the Space Empires series. A classic galactic conquest and turn-based strategy video game where you are the leader of a race of intelligent beings building large spaceships for interplanetary and interstellar travel through warp points between star systems. A Planet that has been Colonized. Once populated, a Colony can grow from 1 CP, to 3 CP, to the maximum of 5 CP.
