About this deal

The AD08 is built around an 11thGen Intel Core-i9 processor and integrated UHD Graphics GPU to provide a platform that, in theory, has an eight-core and sixteen-thread capability. In my early career, I worked as an editor of scholarly science books, and as an editor of "Dummies"-style computer guidebooks for Brady Books (now, BradyGames). I'm a lifetime New Yorker, a graduate of New York University's journalism program, and a member of Phi Beta Kappa. If you’re looking for an alternative to a large desktop, laptops and all-in-one computers are the obvious solution. But a mini PC - sometimes known as a NUC or thin client - offers a more discreet choice. They’re configurable, versatile, and often more affordable than traditional desktops and laptops. The most powerful mini PC is capable of everything from gentle online browsing to gaming and video editing. The Beelink U59 is easily one of the better NUC-sized machines we’ve seen, and it’s cheap enough for even the tightest budgets. Overall, the power in this small system is daunting, with an impressive selection of ports that include two USB 4.0/Thunderbolt and dual 2.5GbE LAN. These give the NPB7 remarkable flexibility for a wide range of applications and plenty of scope for external enhancements to storage and networking. A brilliantly effective design which isn’t expensive for what is inside it.

Two SODIMM memory slots and two M.2 NVMe storage can be changed or augmented. Increasing the amount of RAM from the standard 16GB to a maximum of 64GB merely requires swapping the SODIMM modules. And conversely, the default 512GB SSD can be increased to 2TB by a direct swap, and an additional drive can be added to double that amount. For the money, the AMR5 is a very nice system that has more than enough power for general computing tasks (think Microsoft 365, browsing and even Photoshop) and file sharing. Mini PCs, sometimes known as think clients or NUCs, are ideal for light use, such as web browsing and video streaming. Some can even handle casual gaming sessions. But you won't find the raw power offered by the likes of the best mobile workstations. As such, when testing which mini PC is best, we study several key areas. This includes build quality and form-factor - we want to see a robust machine, and the best materials available for the cost. This is especially true with mini PCs, as they're designed to be easily carried and used in multiple locations.

Paying this little for a full Windows PC does require tempering your expectations a bit. So, the Intel Pentium processor is mainly only comfortable with basic tasks and the storage – a 64GB Flash drive – is both slower and smaller than most basic SSDs. Still, it performs well enough for the price, and its simple, squat design is lovely. It’s practical, too, as you can VESA-mount the whole thing. Where the bigger difference comes is in respect of the compute power since the Radeon Vega integrated GPU can’t beat those Intel-based platforms that use the Iris Xe class GPUs. Promotional material from Acemagician infers that the AMR5 would be a good gaming platform, and we’d only agree with that if the games you play have very modest requirements and you are willing to use lower resolutions and details settings.

Testing conducted by Apple in November and December 2022 using pre-production Mac mini systems with Apple M2 Pro, 12-core CPU, 19-core GPU, 32GB of RAM and 8TB SSD, pre-production Mac mini systems with Apple M2, 8-core CPU, 10‑core GPU, 24GB of RAM and 2TB SSD, production Mac mini systems with Apple M1, 8-core CPU, 8-core GPU, 16GB of RAM and 2TB SSD, and production 3.8GHz 8-core Intel Core i7–based iMac systems with AMD Radeon Pro 5500 XT with 8GB of GDDR6, 8GB of RAM and 512GB SSD, as well as production 3.2GHz 6-core Intel Core i7–based Mac mini systems with Intel Iris UHD Graphics 630, 64GB of RAM and 2TB SSD. Final Cut Pro 10.6.5 tested using a 55-second clip with 4K Apple ProRes RAW media, at 4096x2160 resolution and 59.94 frames per second, transcoded to Apple ProRes 422. Performance tests are conducted using specific computer systems and reflect the approximate performance of Mac mini and iMac. The small size means there’s no room for full-sized ports, but there’s a micro-USB On-The-Go (OTG) port for connecting devices, and a mini-HDMI output – and the Pi’s trademark 40-pin general input/output (GPIO) connector is here too, although you’ll need to solder the pins on yourself if you want to use it. Fortunately, there’s an alternative, and we don’t mean spending the premium for a laptop. Mini PCs replicate the full-sized desktop experience in truly tiny form factors. Some use laptop components such as low-power processors – but because you’re not paying for an attached display or keyboard, the mini PC as a whole is generally considerably cheaper. It depends how you intend to use your mini computer. While both are highly portable, mini PCs are more so, with a far smaller surface area. If you’re working on the go, be aware of the sometimes limited battery life on laptops - if you’re usually running off the mains, a mini PC may be the better choice. Most desktop workstation buyers want tons of expandability and upgradeability. HP's Z2 Mini G9 doesn't have those, but it has awesome performance, impressive connectivity, and surprising serviceability for a PC only 2.7 by 8.3 by 8.6 inches big. Though it can hide under a desk or behind a monitor with an optional VESA mount, the Z2 Mini accommodates the 125-watt processors you'll find in full-size towers, such as our test unit's flagship Intel Core i9-12900K, and an industry-standard graphics card. The latter must be a half-length, half-height GPU powered by the PCI Express slot, but the 12GB Nvidia RTX A2000 in our review system is certainly no slouch. Who It's For
