About this deal

USpatent 5686705,Mark Flowers, Los Gatos, CA,"Surface position location system and method",issued 2007-10-16, assigned to LeapFrog Enterprises, Inc. With the snow largely cutting us off from the outside world for a few days I’ve been super grateful to have another weapon in my arsenal of at-home entertainment for my toddler. LeapPad is a range of tablet computers developed for children. Various models of the LeapPad have been developed by LeapFrog Enterprises since 1999.

In the device manager under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers you should see an item named USB Mass Storage Device. LeapPad was invented by Jim Marggraff [1] and developed by a team from Explore Technologies, Inc., which was founded by Marggraff and acquired by LeapFrog in July 1998. It uses the same patented "NearTouch" technology developed for the Explore Technologies Odyssey Atlasphere. Investigation and development was started in December 1997.

Tech Specs

A round button has four directional keys, and once I pointed it out my toddler could switch the tablet on and off by herself with the silver button on the side. I was extremely happy to find it had a volume button that lets you turn it all the way down. Alternatively you can plug in some headphones. I’m rather attached to my tablet so won’t be handing it over to my kids to use and abuse it any time soon. However I am more than happy for them to have the LeapPad. We’ve been trying out the LeapFrog LeapPad 3 for kids and it’s an amazing introduction to tablets for children.

LeapPad won the first-ever People's Choice Toy of the Year (T.O.T.Y.) award, as well as the Educational T.O.T.Y. award in 2000, sponsored by the Toy Industry Association. [8] LeapPad2 would win both awards in 2013. [9] However if you don’t want your child to have access to the internet on the tablet, you can switch off access in the parental controls section of the LeapPad. LeapFrog. Comedian Michael McIntyre said in a sketch that if there are parents out there raising kids without iPads then he doesn’t understand how they’re doing it. The LeapPad has proven a hit in this house, with my little ones and me, not least because it’s a toy that’s both exciting and educational.

Your child cannot access anything inappropriate, you don’t have to worry about setting filters or them stumbling upon anything dodgy.

As you try to complete the challenges there are smaller games you need to complete. These test your knowledge of numbers, plus my toddler found them really enjoyable. She loved completing a game and moving onto the next stage. The LeapPad is a computer with electrographic sensor. The sensor works as a capacitor and measures the amount of current flowing through corner electrodes into a plate beneath the table top, and uses that information to triangulate the location of the stylus on the table top. [3] The LeapPad is covered by U.S. patents 5686705 and 5877458. My toddler found it easy to follow the helpful tips that the tablet gave her and instructions on what to do next. As you take a look at the different apps and functions, the tablet talks you through each stage, telling your child what their options are and what to do next. The language is clear and easy to follow. Can I use the Leapster or Didj AC adapter with the Leapster Explorer, Leapster GS, or LeapPad1 or LeapPad2?

The Dora game was a perfect choice for my toddler as she is a big fan of the show. The game follows Dora around the world with different challenges to do in every country. There is such a huge emphasis on learning, but your kids won’t realise that. All they will see is a cool gadget and fun games featuring some of their favourite characters, plus lots of new ones.

The LeapPad's popularity helped spawn other LeapPad branded devices that are incompatible with the mainstream LeapPad series of players. These devices were meant for younger audiences who are not ready for the mainstream LeapPad's titles. My First LeapPad - Targeted for preschoolers to Kindergarten-going children, the design of the LeapPad is different from a regular LeapPad in that the books are flipped upwards. The unit was later redesigned to be shaped like a school bus. A British-voiced version was also available in the UK. It’s fun, engaging and really well designed. Plus the price is right. A fabulous introduction to technology for your little one. The system is functionally identical to the first-generation LeapPad, requiring a stylus to operate and books are still being released for the brand as of 2023 [7] Awards [ edit ] I loved playing the games almost as much as my toddler, as you get praised constantly when you complete a task!
