About this deal

Pastel + fixative and Graphite + fixative. A great combination. With these surfaces, you can use both types of fixatives and be confident that your project is secure. Types of varnish, their disadvantages and advantages Its adjustable fan spray tip also makes precision application easier, so you get more coverage without the extra mess. When it is on a rigid surface then take it to a framer familiar with framing pastels, they require a few special things like real glass, not plastic glazing and a trough spacer inside to catch the few bits of dust that will fall off over the years, so they don’t show on the front of the mount. Besides these aesthetic perks, this sprayfix boasts its optimal protection that bolsters the durability of the painting. Not only does it keep the colors from smearing but it can also improve lightfastness. How to varnish oil paintings Oil paintings must be varnished when the paint is dry completely. 6 months must pass before placing a final varnish over the oil painting. But because of possible environmental damage finished oil paintings can be varnished with a retouch varnish first and then varnished with the final varnish in 6+ months.

The first thing I like about the Workable Fixatif is the ease of use. This aerosol spray has got a nice handle that makes spraying hassle-free. It keeps the product from getting on your hands while also providing even and lasting coverage. Using a fixative spray can help protect your artwork from fading due to UV rays, moisture accumulation, dust build-up and more. Investing in a good quality fixative spray is highly recommended for all artists who wish to preserve their artworks for years to come. This fixative is a dream come true for those of us who want our artwork to last: it provides a colorless and transparent finish that won’t wash away from rain or humidity.

Table of Contents:

I’ve considered using a homemade fixative for pastel or hairspray before but they don’t work as well as the oil pastel fixatives. That’s why I settle for a fixative spray for a specific type of medium as much as possible These are the two brands of final fixatives that are made differently and are non-toxic. If you know more about non-toxic fixatives, let me know! I don’t recommend using the Brush and Pencil fixative because the nozzle produces uneven spurs of fixative. It also crumbles thin paper. Besides the handy design, this pastel fixative spray stands out with its reworkable clear finish. You just have to make sure to let it dry before drawing or painting on it. It is good and dry to touch after about 30 minutes.

In the results below I have grouped the seven varnishes into three groups: spray, brush-on and rub-on. Another option to make your watercolour painting less vulnerable to moisture is to use a varnish or fixative on the finished painting. I know that a brush-on, water-based varnish is not a good idea as it would smear the painting. But a spray-on fixative or a brush-on varnish that is not water-based will not re-wet the paint. I wanted to see which ones work best. These are mineral spirit or alcohol based so they won’t re-activate the dried watercolour like a water-based varnish would. I also noticed that this fixative highlights its resin-based content which is similar to the brand’s oil pastel fixative variant, the D’artigny Oil Pastel Sprayfix. It sets the oil pastel pretty well as long as the applications are carefully and lightly applied.

The bonus is that it’s removable, so if you feel like making any restorations in the future, this varnish won’t make it difficult to do so. Krylon Gallery Series Fine Art Spray Find a well-ventilated space. Much better if you spray outdoors. If you’re left with no choice but to spray indoors, you should use a fan to let the air circulate. Its workability is great for layers of color, allowing me to modify and detail my pieces between applications. You can apply multiple lighter coats as you develop your finished piece.
