Pain, a burning sensation and itching of the nipple can be present months before the emergence of the typical ulcerated lesion. The application of heat for a few minutes before a feed, gentle massage of the affected area during feeding, and cold packs after a feed and between feeds for comfort. They gently put a hollow needle through the cut into your breast and take a sample of breast tissue. Your doctor may send a swab of the nipples to be cultured, to identify the most appropriate antibiotic to use. Unlike wire localization, these devices are fully inserted into your breast and don’t stick outside of your breast.

In thoracic computer tomography scans of children aged 0-10 years, the distance to the closest vital structure was compared between the traditional anterior insertion site (2nd intercostal space midclavicular line) and an alternative anterior insertion site (2nd intercostal space at the nipple line). This can be done with the doctor either feeling the area or while using an imaging test to guide the needle.Breast and nipple thrush (a fungal infection) may occur in the first weeks after birth, but can develop at any time. If you’re undergoing a fine needle aspiration biopsy or a core needle biopsy, your healthcare provider will most likely recommend using a local anesthetic.

A CT scan, chest X-ray and liver ultrasound scan may be needed to check whether the cancer has spread. Holding the ultrasound device against the breast, the radiologist locates the mass, makes a small incision to insert the needle, and takes several core samples of tissue. Protect the area where you received the needle biopsy by keeping the bandage in place for as long as instructed. Nipple discharge is not usually a sign of anything serious, but sometimes it's a good idea to get it checked just in case.

Even if no further treatment such as surgery is needed, the marker allows a breast imaging radiologist to see on future mammograms where the biopsy was done. When the area is numb, your doctor puts a thin wire with a small hook through the skin and into the abnormal area. A breast biopsy is the only diagnostic procedure that can definitively determine if a suspicious area is cancerous.
