About this deal

Spencer Williams: You and your team really got to set a whole different tone. As you said, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes takes place many years before the story many of us became familiar with. The Capitol is still very sophisticated and beautiful, but there is an eeriness to it. To me, it felt as though we were watching a beautiful period piece set in the world of Panem. How did you approach The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes costumes to meet the time period? Honor Gillies as Barb Azure, Konstantin Taffet as Clerk Carmine and Rachel Zegler as Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes. Photo Credit: Murray Close For her piece worn to The Hunger Games, I wanted to show a bit of fraying by sewing the seams on the outside. It looks like she’s maintaining it. She’s repurposing pieces because she is talented and is a designer in her own right. Tigris is able to keep the family looking presentable when they’re really struggling inside. There is a bit of discoloration to her look. It’s faded. So we airbrushed all the edges and airbrushed a darker fuchsia tone along the seams. It was a very subtle process, and the team did such a beautiful, beautiful job. I tried to keep her in a happier tone because she is trying to remain hopeful, and she’s always optimistic. But also, she is terrified of what’s happening in the world and like you said, her clothing is her armor. It’s how she can protect herself and then present something that’s not really happening internally for her. Her costumes were really important. Illustration by Gloria Kim – Courtesy of Lionsgate The costumes of the male and female in the 74th Hunger Games represented folded origami paper. Their headpieces were sculpted to look like a professionally made origami. [1] However, Johanna Mason later stated that their stylist was the biggest idiot in the Capitol and had dressed the District 7 tributes as trees for the last forty years, contradicting the costumes used in the films. Yes. I’d done this before — I designed the first Harry Potter — and you don’t want to disappoint the fans. Things change when you do a film, but you try the best — I try the best I can to be respectful of the material and the characters. I mean, it’s mostly about the characters, and even if you can’t do every detail that’s in a book, you want to get the essence of that character across. However, in the book, Katniss Everdeen observed that both tributes from District 1 were spray-painted silver, in tasteful tunics glittering with jewels. [2] District 2 - Masonry [ ]

Trish Summerville: Having Tigris to dress was great. And then when it’s Hunter Schafer being cast in this role, you get the double win-win. Kurt:"We wanted it to be seen in different ways - we didn't want her to become a super hero in an immobile suit that she can only wear one way. Her wings and shoulders are designed to be ceremonial, but the armour can also be taken off so you can see that girl again - you can see Katniss. Even if it didn't have the wings, she could be out on the field and become a soldier." What is Jennifer like to work with?Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. Of course, my immediate thought was, “Oh dear, how do I do all that?” That was the absolute terror factor that comes in the minute I read something. But I loved the books. I couldn’t put them down. Spencer Williams: Oh, okay! I need to get in on this immediately! Congratulations Trish on this collaboration and this incredible new film – The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes . I’m so excited for everyone to see it. Thank you so much for joining me. I’m so glad we finally got to do a formal interview.

Volunteer as tribute alongside a reaped Peeta and represent District 12 in our Adult Hunger Games Katniss Everdeen Costume. This suit was worn in the second Hunger Games film, 'Catching Fire' when Katniss Everdeen enters the Quarter Quell with the other districts victors in a tropical beach themed anniversary tournament. We always take the actors’ personalities into account. I mean, I never really design the clothes until I know who the actor is. Of course they have opinions, but you also have to make the actor comfortable on-camera. That’s my job: to make it easy for them to their job, to not think about the costume. Some of these costumes, of course, are not the most comfortable things on earth, especially in that heat. But you have to let the actor’s personality shine through to a certain extent. She’s so much fun to work with. She tells people that she was my Barbie doll. But she has a lot of good ideas, she knows how things should fit, and she wanted all her clothes to be very constricting — she has that funny walk [in the movie] because she can’t walk any other way. Her shoes are so outrageously high and uncomfortable, and she wanted that. I’m like, “Are you sure you can do the scene?” And she’s like, “Yes, I’ll do it. I’ll take them off in between shots. It’ll be fine.” She was miserable, but she did it because she felt it was right. In the book, the fashions are so outrageous in the Capitol that they aren’t meant to be actually worn. And that was the point: poking fun at fashion, and how outrageous trends can be.Clove and Cato were dressed as gods to represent their district. The gold color was shiny and sure to catch attention. Their headpieces were made of the same materials as the victor's crown/headband. [1] District 3 - Technology [ ] Is that something you took into account when you chose what they would be wearing, what the actors underneath were like? For the 75th Hunger Games, the tributes had electric-light-studded outfits. [3] District 4 - Fishing [ ]
