About this deal

Prioritising mental health and protecting your relationship with your child is NEVER the wrong decision. Heidi has spoken openly about the impact the process had on her, sharing her experiences as a parent whose own mental health spiraled as a result of the overwhelming stress and pressure felt by parents of children unable to attend school.

Your Child is not Broken by Heidi Mavir – Life Review of Your Child is not Broken by Heidi Mavir – Life

I was encouraged to read this when struggling to find support for my undiagnosed 15yr old show dropping out of school at the final hurdle. Heidi speaks with the authority someone can only attain through living through that situation themselves and she validates the wide range of emotions felt by SEND parents by showing that we are not alone in feeling as we do. As a parent of a neurodivergent child this has been a really good read it tells you that you aren't alone. The UK is not a culture that handles differences well for the most part, and that doesn't work well when it comes to figuring out how to educate and socialise your children without traumatising them especially. I am fairly sure I am also autistic (I have learnt this through the assessment process for her) and that her two younger siblings also are autistic. To be honest, I don't generally read many books on the subject of neurodiversity because, well, I'm living it everyday anyway, I don't really feel the need to, and sometimes we all need some escapism instead. We make judgements about a student’s intelligence based on how well they move through the school systems we’ve set up. I have bought a copy of the book to give to my other daughter, who I know will relate to this too, for her children too. Don’t sacrifice the relationship with your spicy child for the benefit of institutions and systems set out to make them “fit in” like everyone else, even when it’s to their detriment. I’ve been ‘that’ parent for nearly ten years now and while I’ve made my peace with how I’m sure I’m perceived by professionals, it never stops being exhausting.

We pay our respect to Elders past and present and extend that respect to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples today. It's okay to say actually that's not good enough and what should be at the heart of decisions made is the child. I think the take away from this book is that everyone is different, whether you are neurotypical or not, so what works for one may not work for another. So much truth and all the facts that parents come across and face to face with the reality of living with a neurodivergent child that tries to find their way into a explicitly neurotypical world. It’s not about complying with the norms of society, but rather meeting each individual where they are and accepting their differences as qualities to their uniqueness. Heidi took Theo's case to SEN Tribunal and secured a bespoke package of education for him so that he had the support he needed to finish his GCSEs. Through her work supporting families she aims to ensure that children like Theo no longer fall through the cracks, but rather are supported by knowledgeable, empowered adults who know how to get their voices heard.

About - Heidi Mavir

This is the first book I have listened to since my daughter’s diagnosis and I have found it so helpful and affirming. Her guilty pleasures are posh gin, Yorkshire Tea, and her leopard print sofa, which cost more than her car. It can feel like that when others are pointing out the ways your child is not fitting in or the ways your child is failing at school. Heidi is passionate about empowering families in their fight to secure suitable education for their children and young people.

The part about building relationships with other families with neurodivergent children really echoed how lucky I have been to connect with so many wonderful families out there. I want to know why my kid is great in the world we live, not by castigating ordinary people as 'ableist' for talking about the mainstream in the world we live in. She has built an online community of over 6000 families, supported by parent professionals and SEN advocates, who want to improve opportunities for autistic learners. This is one for parents who don’t want to push their ND children to mask in an attempt to appear neurotypical or be somehow “easier” to parent — but rather, who want to create a space where our children feel safe being their most authentic, complicated, messy selves. It's a very touchy feely book in the sense that it is an honest account of the feelings involved and very affirming to those feelings. The author gives parents the knowledge they need to understand and support their children, and care for themselves. Excellently articulated, it gives permission to be ‘that’ parent, fighting for the needs of our children, and the respect they deserve.
