Laura Mvula, Tom Odell and AlunaGeorge for BRITs Critics' Choice 2013?". Digital Spy. 6 December 2012 . Retrieved 22 December 2012. a b c d e f g h "British certifications – Tom Odell". ODELL: As an artist, you know, my biggest hope is that ultimately the art connects with people, of course. But the most powerful thing I can do is to let go of of anything I create and accept and trust in the sort of wisdom of the world and of uncertainty as to what that may be used for or may not be used for. You know, it's at moments like these that the internet feels like a real force for good and something that can unite us rather than divide us. I feel connected to the world. Halls, Eleanor. Thomas Peter Odell (born 24 November 1990) is an English singer-songwriter. He released his debut extended play, Songs from Another Love, in 2012. It won the BRITs Critics' Choice Award in early 2013. Odell's debut studio album, Long Way Down, was issued on 24 June 2013. Three years later, his follow-up studio album, Wrong Crowd, was released, on 10 June 2016. This was followed by the release two years later, on 26 October 2018, of his third studio album, Jubilee Road. Monsters, his fourth album, was released on 9 July 2021, while his fifth album, Best Day Of My Life, was released the next year, on 28 October 2022. Odell has said his lyrics are inspired by his "inability to sustain a relationship with someone for longer than six months." He says, "I find that I write much better songs when I'm being honest, and writing about things that happen to me. It can get a little weird though, when friends or girlfriends work out that a song is about them. But it's amazing what you can get away with it. Artistic licence, I think they call it." [37] Activism [ edit ] Tom Odell Announces New Album 'Wrong Crowd' | News | Clash Magazine". Clashmusic.com. 4 April 2016 . Retrieved 31 July 2016.

Throughout his school years, Odell wrote songs in a band that had trouble maintaining a lead singer. This trouble inspired him to start singing the songs he wrote, and Odell says he "sang [the songs] how [he] wanted them to sound" rather than worrying about someone else not bringing his vision to life. [5]

ODELL: This song is about our tendency to hurt those who we love the most. When we hurt someone we love, we probably hurt ourselves even more. There's a sort of masochism to it. You know how to hurt me. But every time you hurt me, know that it will be a bit of you that I also bleed. However, in more recent times, his music hasn’t been selling as well. That said, the three studio albums Odell has released since –“Wrong Crowd” (2016), “Jubilee Road” (2018) and “Monsters” (2021) – all scored within the top five of the UK Albums Chart. Earnshaw, Helen (15 April 2013). "Tom Odell Exclusive Interview". Femalefirst.co.uk . Retrieved 30 June 2013. ODELL: I've played the piano since I was 6 or 7 years old. I'm 32 now. Quite a long time. I've made four albums before this one, and the piano has always played a big part of it. I actually read a book just before the album - I started making the album - by Jenny Odell. It's called "How To Do Nothing." It made me reflect on my own role in the attention economy. And everyone is competing for our attention. What that's done to art and to music is that everyone's trying to cram the most amount of information in the shortest possible time. So I wanted to create songs and an album of which created space rather than filling people's space, where our thoughts can move around with more freedom and actually they become healthier thoughts because of that.Go Tell Her Now (Acoustic) - Single by Tom Odell". Tom Odell is a singer who burst on the scene during the early-to-mid aughts. He was actually discovered by a more-established British singer in Lily Allen. His first LP, 2013’s “Long Way Down”, proved to be a UK Albums Chart topper. That same year he also received a BRIT Award in the Critics’ Choice category.ESTRIN: Your small role in this, I mean, that's the internet, your song spread. And, I mean, talk about attention economy. This is - this song has gotten so much attention in a good way. And I guess I wonder, is this ultimately what you hope your music can do? I don’t want to be sad anymore,” he repeats on “Sad Anymore”, jealous of, and confused by, the “happy people” as a haunting wail weaves in and out of his wavering voice. He seems desperate for connection, be it good or bad. “Come on let’s fight, don’t be polite,” he sings on “The Blood We Bleed”, in the least confrontational way. ODELL: Well, interestingly, the first idea for the song, the main hook was I think today is the worst day of my life. These times are hard to live in. There appears to be so much division and so much judgment, so much pain and suffering that people are going through and also so much inequality. But for some reason, it seemed to have more power, more sadness with the phrase I think today is the best day of my life. You begin to realize that perhaps this isn't the person's best day of my life, and perhaps there's a sort of desperation to that phrase. witter, vanessa (6 November 2015), Kaiser Permanente "Grow Old With Me" , retrieved 14 February 2021Jubilee Road: "OLiS – sales for the period 26.10.2018 – 01.11.2018". And the honesty I managed to get down in that song is resonating with people for all sorts of different reasons. And it was powerful, incredibly inspiring. Tom Odell talks money, mental strife – and monsters". The Gentleman's Journal . Retrieved 27 February 2021. I can’t put my finger on what makes this ambiently energetic album so easy to enjoy. Maybe it’s the marriage of easy sentiment and effective use of loud-loud-quiet-loud songwriting. Perhaps it’s its confidence that things are on the up. Or maybe it’s the beats that activate a muscle memory from nights out long forgotten. It could simply be that the songs are catchy and fun, and promise future dancefloor communion with friends. Either way, it’s very hard to resist. Tom Odell: 'I'd love to play a show in New Zealand' ". Stuff. 13 September 2016 . Retrieved 21 March 2023.
