Despite riding a pretty sizeable wave of hype for such a small game, Agony turned out to be a pretty disappointing overall experience. However, I’ve yet to meet a person who has played this 2018 title and doesn’t consider it one of the most disturbing games ever made. The opening narration informs you that Isaac's mother spends her day watching religious television, and that God spoke to her and informed her that her son Isaac (that's you!) needs to be killed. And it only gets worse from there. As you get further through the game, levels start to get names like "Scarred Womb," and you battle with more and more enemies that resemble malformed versions of Isaac. It doesn’t take detailed graphics and realistic environments to create a disturbing experience that’ll take you out of your comfort zone.

The game only gets darker and darker from there, eventually falling apart completely and revealing yet another layer to the puzzle.

It’s the feeling you get when you can tell something is profoundly wrong, but you can’t put your finger on what it is. Or, perhaps, you’re scared of what you might uncover if you look closer. Umm I stopped using this program about a year ago because my PS4 controller broke, so my memory is a bit shotty. Despite its time’s graphic limitations, Silent Hill managed to deliver an intense psychological horror experience through smart sound design (I can still hear the radio static) and creative storytelling. I've tried restarting the game, verifying game cache, restarting computer, tried to reset eveything. Nothing worked. Right now the game is unplayable for me.

The game is also full of the agonizing stories of the Ishimura’s crew as they were turned into Necromorphs one by one. This is a list of disturbing horror games rather than disturbing games. The line between those types of games can be fine, but the basic idea is that this list doesn’t include otherwise non-scary games with disturbing moments. Replace the monitor when you try another monitor in place of the one you have, and the problems go away. Assuming you tried the other steps above and weren't successful, there's little if any reason to think the problem is due to something else.This indie roguelike shooter puts you in control of Isaac – a traumatized child traveling the hellish dungeon beneath his home in a quest to kill his own mother before she kills him. There are actually very few horror games that utilize an isometric perspective, and I think Sanitarium shows us why. It’s incredibly hard to scare players in that “jump” kind of way when you allow them to see so much of the areas around them. Truth be told, this game isn’t even that scary. As noted above, though, the difference between “scary” and “disturbing” is sometimes an important distinction to make. Any game can be spooky. But it takes a great game to really chill you to the bone and leave a lasting impression.
