About this deal

Of course, great audio deserves a premium pair of cans, but balancing budget against sound quality can be a predicament for many players.

With 3D enabled, you hear echoes reverberate up and down the Prison map's cells for example, and the same goes for standing underneath waterfalls on the Sunken Ruins map. Everyone else is treated to a rich soundscape that's perfect for gaming, but it's not so tightly tuned that it can't work for music or movies, too. Thanks to the flexible headband and the plush earpads, the headset feels very comfortable to wear for hours at a time. It’s good news, then, that the core audio quality is so good – miles ahead of the competition, in fact.Have the platinum headset which I would assume is better than the new pulse or the same but they have brought the costs down.

First things first, though: Sony’s commitment to style and design really shines through in the Platinum headset. The headset lacks a boom mic, but a pinhole microphone rests on the bottom of the left earcup to offer the voice communication that defines a gaming headset. Of course, the standout feature is the Platinum headset's new 3D 'object-based' audio, a first in console gaming. Footsteps and gunfire imparted a general sense of directionality, but they didn’t have the same precision on Sony’s PlayStation Platinum as we’ve heard on other headsets. Our best headsets guides are updated as regularly as possible since new products are always coming onto the market, and we endeavor to deliver an honest recommendation on which are worth considering which is why we believe it's important to keep up to date with what products are relevant. The most important factor is sound quality and, thankfully, Sony’s Platinum headset delivers that in spades.

I ask because, for those of us that already own the Platinum headset, is there any point (outside of aesthetics) to purchase the Pulse for PS5? In The Last Guardian, those cavernous rooms feel truly empty: you hear the echo of footsteps resonate in your ears, and you can hear the sound of creaking wooden walkways as they bend and strain in the wind. The headset can only hold two EQ presets at a time, assigned to the 1 and 2 positions on the power switch. Insert a small pin or similar object (not included) into the hole surrounding the reset button on the wireless adaptor, push in for at least one second, and then release it.

This switches the headphones off completely, avoiding any of use the inbuilt rechargeable battery, and disabling the buttons.

The three music presets are Bass Boost, Hip Hop, and Techno, while the two movie presets are Action and Horror. The best thing about the Pulse 3D Wireless Headset is its integration with the PS5 and PS4’s user interface, providing you with hassle-free control over your in-game audio. Both headsets are nearly identical upon first glance aside from their colors, but the Platinum packs a few extra features that the Gold wireless headset lacks. We were able to play on and off for an eight-hour period, and we barely dove past the two-thirds mark according to the PS4. The cups are slightly more compact, making for a snugger overall fit – which we personally appreciate – although this does mean that battery life is on the lower end of what you’d expect for a wireless headset; Sony advertises about 12 hours, but our testing pegs the reality closer to ten.The headset has no adjustability options whatsoever, so while we’ve had little issue wearing it ourselves, your mileage may vary – and there’s no way to adapt it if you end up with a poor fit. As well as bucking the gaming headset trend for poor audio, the PlayStation Platinum Wireless Headset also eschews the common over-the-top design. Although it boasts impressive sound quality while gaming, this headset doesn't sound its best when used for things like music or streaming videos and television. It gives it an edge, and likewise for the simplicity of setup - a wireless USB dongle is all you need, rather than routing to an external processing unit via an optical cable.
