He does manage to break free of the brainwashing in chapter 297, thanks to an accidental injury, but then decides that he actively likes being Vicius's puppet, because he "can get higher in life" that way than simply being a "hero" she summoned. Ambition Is Evil: As is outlined in chapter 300, from his own POV, there is absolutely nothing he wouldn't do, no matter how vile, to "get higher in life." In fact, he preferred the vile methods.
