It’s not so much that you drive wetness outwards, more that it just falls off, so if water does get through the Pertex outer, it really doesn’t hang around for long.

The extra wide Velcro and elastic combination on the cuffs works well to give good adjustment and fit, especially compared to some of the skinny Velcro you see on other jackets.The singular layer of pertex breathes well and copes with sweat better than most traditional layering systems would be able to (this is because the sweat is drawn straight through the Dryactiv insulation on to the Pertex where it can evaporate from). Despite its tough credentials, this fabric is lightweight, soft to the touch and super easy to take care of.
Some nice touches elsewhere: the hem has a non-pile area at the bottom for neatness of fit and, we’re guessing, reduced bulk under a harness and there are hidden waist-cord adjusters housed out of the way in the venting hand pockets. That said, if I were re-engineering this jacket, I’d make the flap a little larger as, at times, the famous sideways lash of wind managed to give me a cold tummy.
Indeed it was maybe six of seven years until I started carrying a shell again and that was when I got a superlight smock for an alpine trip. The Montane looked better, fit better had better features ( detachable hood, cordura on high wear areas etc) BUT… it fell apart.
