About this deal

So what is UniFi OS? It’s Ubiquiti’s way to brand the controller software and additional applicaitons that Ubiquiti provides. UniFi OS currently only runs on the UDM, UDM-Pro, and Cloud Key Gen2+. If you’re interested, I have more details on UniFi OS in my UXG-Pro Preview. UniFi OS Applications: Protect, Access and Talk

The UniFi Dream Machine offers Smart Queue Management (SQM) to mitigate bufferbloat, which can significantly degrade the performance of a typical home or office network. SQM is highly CPU-intensive meaning typical consumer routers equipped with SQM usually struggle to achieve decent throughputs. This is not the case with the impressive UDM Pro. With its 4-core 1.7 GHz processor and 4 GB of DDR4 memory, this powerhouse is able to fully mitigate bufferbloat for the fastest (300-910 Mbps) ultrafast broadband connections. For new deployments however it's a harder choice both are great products this really comes down to how is it going to be used and is it worth the extra money? The steps to setup the device through the app are similar, just make sure you have Bluetooth enabled and you are connected to the UDM-Pro in your Bluetooth settings. Remote Management and UniFi OS: It’s Complicated Standalone is my term, but these gateways require the UniFi Network application to be run on another piece of hardware such as a Cloud Key, local PC/server, or cloud service. The USG models are nearing the end of their useful life, while the UXG models are current. Cloud Gateways — Dream MAchines The UDM line of products are essentially enterprise-level network appliances that combine the following functions into a single device:The UDM SE or Unifi Dream Machine Special Edition has now been released, and we can take our first look at this brand new device. Trying to provide high-quality Wi-Fi coverage and performance in a typical home using the single Wi-Fi router/hub provided by broadband providers is an impossible task. While mesh systems such as NETGEAR’s Orbi and BT’s Whole Home Wi-Fi can certainly improve on the typically woefully inadequate range of a single Wi-Fi router, all these systems simply cannot match the performance of a properly configured set of Wi-Fi Access Points that are connected to the router via Ethernet. The UDM-Pro runs UniFi OS, which means it can also run the UniFi Protect, UniFi Talk and UniFi Access software if needed. UniFi Protect is their network video recording software. Talk is for controlling their VoIP phones, and Access is their upcoming access control system. More on those later. POE support - if you only need and will ever need 8 ports great - but as soon as start needing more ports and want to add a dedicated switch then for me your better off using the savings towards that dedicated separate switch to begin with.

The good news is that the UDM Pro has the processing power to deliver effective bufferbloat mitigation with ultrafast connections, as shown in Table 1 below, which compares various routers offered by Ubiquiti, all of which incorporate SQM. Our favourite router prior to the UDM Pro – the Ubiquiti ER-4 (which belongs to Ubiquiti’s EdgeRouter range) – is able to achieve throughputs of 300-350 Mbps with SQM enabled. U6 Long-Range

For wireless testing we connected a set of UniFi nanoHD access points to the PoE switch and added them to our cloud account. Once online, they started broadcasting our predefined SSIDs and guest networks, with details automatically appearing in the portal’s wireless experience graph.

What also sets the UDM Pro apart from many other routers (including Ubiquiti’s own EdgeRouter series) is an exciting set of features. The in-built UniFi Controller software allows the provision and management of a range of UniFi devices, which include best-in-class Wi-Fi Access Points, through a single, centralised interface. Ubiquiti is still going to be offering the modular options for those customers who still need it as in some use cases, having everything under one device isn’t actually practical. But for a small business or home environment the UDM covers a lot of needs and isn’t that expensive when comparing the individual UniFi components and the UDM-Pro isn’t much more on top of that. The main differences between the two are the access point the UDM has, the dual WAN the UDM-Pro has as well as its ability to run UniFi Protect, UniFi Access, UniFi Talk and UniFi LED on top of UniFi Network. The UDM Pro offers advanced firewall policies and persistent threat management to act as an Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) and Intrusion Detection System (IDS). EdgeRouters expose more networking features in their web interface, and can be configured through a command line. EdgeRouters are more traditional networking equipment, where UniFi is “software defined” and managed by the UniFi Network application. Outside of a few setup wizards, the EdgeRouter and EdgeSwitch products don’t hold your hand, and they expect you to be able to configure things manually.

Conclusions

Before you begin with the port forwarding process, please make sure that you have the following things available and noted down: For outdoor applications, shielded Category 5 (or above) cabling should be used for all wired Ethernet connections and should be grounded through the AC ground of the power supply. Built-in switch, with 1 SFP+ slot and 17 gigabit RJ45 LAN ports, 4 with PoE, 4 with PoE+, and 4 with PoE++ ports We were also able to use the iOS app to add the USW PoE switch to our account, and were blown away by its clever augmented reality (AR) feature: point your device camera at the ports and a live overlay immediately pops up, showing which ones are active and what’s connected to them.

Dual WAN with Failover Supports dual internet/ISP connections with failover: if the primary WAN connection drops, it will automatically switch to the other WAN connection. Like the USG, the USG-Pro is old, and most of the limitations apply. The USG-Pro has slightly more powerful hardware than the USG, but not by much. If you’re comparing to the EdgeRouter line, the EdgeRouter Pro (discontinued) and the USG-Pro share a CPU, and have similar performance. Both the UDM-Pro and UDM-SE are great choices as the heart of your home/office network. By not integrating a Wi-Fi Access Point (WAP), you are free to mix and match any number of WAPs as needed. This is great for small deployments where you might have limited access points and camera's and you don't need a second switch. The price In 2019, the UniFi Dream Machine ( UDM) and UniFi Dream Machine Pro ( UDM-Pro) were released. They were not straightforward replacements for the USG and USG-Pro.

Product Reviews

The UDM Pro includes the UniFi Network Controller so you canmanage your UniFi Switches and APs. It can also run the UniFiProtect software for convenient monitoring and completemanagement of your camera surveillance system. Video recordingsare stored on the built-in NVR (hard drive not included) and canbe easily accessed using the UniFi Protect mobile app. Via remoteaccess, you can securely view the recordings that are privatelystored on the UDM Pro rather than a third-party server. For WAN interfaces, the UDM-Pro has a 10 Gbps SFP+ and a 1 Gbps RJ45 port. For LAN interfaces, the UDM-Pro has a 10 Gbps SFP+, and a 8-port gigabit RJ45 Ethernet switch.
