The Car is a nuanced work that discloses its multiple layers the more one listens: it can be funky, for example in I Ain’t Quite Where I Think I Am (which sees the Monkeys at their most Sly & the Family Stone), or reminiscent of 60s French music as in the magnificent Big Ideas. There is the grandiosity of the synth-driven Sculptures of Anything Goes and the elegance of the first single, There’d Better Be a Mirror Ball, with the line “Got yesterday still leaking through the roof ain’t nothing new” being one of the best lyrics Turner has ever written. Unlike its predecessor, The Car is not a concept album. Lyrically, the album refers frequently to show business, specifically the music and film industries. [3] It makes references to fame, creativity, the passage of time and nostalgia, audience expectations, [3] espionage, [8] and disillusion. [14] The album has been described as "cinematic" [32] with Turner "assuming the meta-role of an artistically struggling movie director". [33] It has also been noted, as depicting, "a decadent world of marble staircases, moated buildings, the popping of champagne corks and aeroplane descents over the French Riviera," [14] as well as, "the tensions between art and commerce, between performance and authenticity." [16] Turner cited, In the Blink of an Eye (2005) by Walter Murch, as an inspiration, and thought it felt connected to “the process and also the feel or lyrics on [The Car].” [34] Other things Turner was reading at the time include, Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe series, [4] and the works of David Foster Wallace and George Saunders. [33] [35] Artwork and title [ edit ] Turner’s been in this neighbourhood before with The Last Shadow Puppets, of course. That side project sometimes seemed too knowing for their own good – Turner and partner-in-crime Miles Kane playing dress-up in frilly shirts and crushed velvet. But new songs like The Car, Heroes And Villains harpsichord to the fore, and Perfect Sense, so fastidiously Bacharach baroque, inhabit a similar zone with far more conviction than pastiche. Retrieved 24 December 2022.The band's sixth studio album Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino was released in May 2018 to critical acclaim, but its stylistic deviation was polarizing for listeners. [1] [2] Right after the South American leg of the tour for that album ended, Turner began thinking of new music with the idea of writing, "a song that could close the show". His intention was to return to a more guitar heavy sound, although not the one seen in previous album AM. [3] DIY's Albums of 2022". DIY. 12 December 2022. Archived from the original on 22 December 2022 . Retrieved 24 December 2022. I had big ideas, the band were so excited,” Turner croons in Big Ideas, always there with the pre-emptive defence lines, and more than ever, it’d be easy to see The Car as a solo album in all but name. But the truth, one suspects, is rather more complicated than that, and The Car is a complicated and incrementally rewarding album; the Arctic Monkeys’ best, possibly, and certainly one that reveals its hooks and snares with the measure and composure that the band now bring to all their craft. a b c d e f g h Richardson, Mark (18 October 2022).
