About this deal

You won't find any big, brash chain stores in Bournville. There are just a handful - and they're all small, quaint independents. Some are on the Village Green, others are in Mary Vale Road . Up until five years ago, you couldn't buy alcohol anywhere in Bournville - there were no off-licences, bars or pubs. The suburb was unique in Birmingham (and probably the UK) because of this. The immediate fear is that the factory will eventually be closed with the loss of about 5,000 jobs, but there is also concern that the social fabric of the area could tear without the focal point the factory seems to provide for its 30,000 or so inhabitants. Now that Kraft has upped its offer – and borrowed much of the money to finance it – it is likely that it too will be looking for assets to sell. When I returned to Bournville this week, pulling into the familiar railway station – now painted a Dairy Milk purple – beside the sprawling factory, I found despondent workers and angry locals.

Paul Clarke, a manager at Cadbury for most of his working life until he left in 2004, says he fears political pressure may not be enough to keep the company in Bournville. "How does a community talk to a company that has no roots?" he says. Now that Kraft, an American food giant with a voracious appetite, looks set to gobble up the company, Cadbury has become a cause celebre for those who argue the proposed sale symbolises Britain's declining manufacturing clout.

As well as the open spaces, all of the roads within the Bournville Village Trust estate are named after trees. The other thing Bournville is noted for is its beautiful "frozen in time" houses. Originally built for Cadbury workers, they remain more or less intact from when they were built at the end of the 19th Century. So even to this day, residents live in such delightfully-named streets such as Cob Lane, Mulberry Road, Laurel Grove, Cedar Road and Sycamore Road. One of the city's biggest running clubs has its home in the suburb, with its base at Rowheath Pavilion.
