Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands knighted Brother Andrew in 1993. In 1997, he received the World Evangelical Alliance’s Religious Liberty Award, recognising his lifetime of service to suffering Christians and his passion for evangelical ministry. Andrew’s place at the bible college was delayed by a year. Despite receiving a telegram from WEC telling him not to come, Andrew believed God was instructing him to go. Before going away on mission, Andrew started work at the Ringers chocolate factory. Working in a female dominated environment which was smitten with filthy jokes, God used Andrew and another Christian, and future wife Corrie, to reach their lost co-workers. Through personal witness and inviting them to evangelistic events, many became Christians, including the ring leader of the women. God's Smuggler by Brother Andrew with John and Elizabeth Sherrill: Young Reader's Edition is quite an interesting read. The story of brother Andrew is one you may not be familiar with. During the Cold War the spread of the Gospel had been hindered in Eastern Europe for communism is incompatible with Christianity. Yet when the world seems at its darkest Christ will shine its brightest. God called a man to not only deliver God’s word to those who need it but to share the gospel and melt the hearts of his enemies. The book God’s Smuggler is a autobiography of brother Andrew’s life. Now until recently brother Andrew’s story had been written at a popular level inaccessible to some. In typical fashion Chosen Publications saw this need and created a young readers edition of this impactful book. While it is an abridgment of the original work any late Elementary or early middle school age child will find this book gripping and impactful. Part of the gripping nature of this Edition is due to the addition of drawings throughout the book. These drawings bring the reader into the story making it real to them. As a child, brother Andrew was mischievous and dreamt of adventure. When Germany invaded, Andrew amused himself (and the rest of the village) by playing pranks on the occupying troops.Brother Andrew was born on 11 May 1928 in Sint Pancras, the Netherlands. He joined the colonial army of the Dutch East Indies, and converted to Christianity during a period of convalescence, where he spent much of his time reading the Bible. After the war, van der Bijl joined the Dutch army and was sent to Indonesia as part of the colonial force attempting to quash the Indonesian struggle for independence. He was excited about the adventure until the shooting started and he killed people. By his own account, van der Bijl was involved in the massacre of an Indonesian village, indiscriminately killing everyone who lived there. After Andrew was severely wounded during his time in the army, he began reading the Bible one day and eventually accepted Christ as his Savior. After sensing the Lord calling him to ministry, he went to the WEC Missionary Training College in Glasgow, Scotland. There he learned to rely on God for everything, from food and clothing to lodging and visas.
