About this deal

There’s plenty to like about the 8.3 5G’s design and generous screen, but things fall flat in the camera department. Marketed as a quad-cam set-up (although that includes a 2MP depth sensor), it has a 64MP main camera, alongside a 12MP ultra-wide and 2MP macro counterparts. In bright lighting, the main camera’s shots (which we recommend setting to 16MP to save space) are decent, serving up perfectly usable pictures. The detail could be a bit better, however, and we’ve taken consistently better shots with the OnePlus Nord. The ultra-wide lens performs well, with minimal sacrifices made for the wider shot. If you take a lot of landscape or architectural photos, this should be your go-to lens.

Asides from that headline feature, the 8.3 5G offers exactly the sort of power we might expect at this price point; a Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G processor and 6GB of RAM.The Nokia 8.3 5G features a 6.81-inch Full HD+ screen with an aspect ratio of 20:9. That means the screen is taller than those on most handsets, which means you get a larger screen without the phone feeling too large in the hand.

Nokia 8.3 5G review: a Bond phone with the Midas touch Nokia 8.3 5G review: a Bond phone with the Midas touch

With a large display and 5G capabilities to power, battery life is a potential issue for the Nokia 8.3 5G, but the good news is that we experienced impressive battery performance during our testing, with the phone never failing to make it through a full day on a full charge. The 24 MP front camera tells a similar story. It’s more than good enough for taking selfies in the daylight and video calls, but low light performance isn’t anything to write home about. However, the heft makes it feel reassuringly solid, and having survived an accidental encounter with the kitchen flaw I can confirm it is very well built. As an added bonus, unlike many phones at this price it also has a formal IP 52 water resistance rating. This isn’t quite as good as an IP 68 rating, but it does add some protection from sprays of water.By default, HDR is always on. There is the option to change this setting to auto via the camera menu, but not off. Overall, we've been happy to leave HDR on because the application is satisfactory. OZO Audio is on board. We've explained what this is in great detail in our review of the Panasonic Lumix G100. However, there is no manual control over the intelligent microphones in the 8.3 5G - it's all automatic, presumably through scene detection. In the real world, that puts it at close-to flagship performance, and we didn’t notice any slow-down or stutters in regular use, even in more demanding games. Crank up the quality settings in beautiful titles like Nimian Legends: Brightridge, however, and you’ll notice some slow-down and dropped frames, but nothing too drastic. There's something to be understood with the numbers for photos. The regular resolution of the camera sensor is 16 megapixels (4608x3456), which is plenty enough for sharing any pictures on social media. That's a print size of 15.3x11.6in at 300ppi, again a decent size. Send your unwanted phone to us and enjoy peace of mind knowing that it will be safely and securely disposed of. It costs you nothing, and we’ll ensure that the raw materials get reused. For Laptops / Tablets: lets you select a monthly Device Plan Credit Agreement (3-48 months) with a 24 month Data Plan. You can pay off your Device Plan early, and if you do, you can then keep your Data Plan on a 30-day contract or leave. If your Data Plan ends for any reason, you will need to keep on paying your monthly Device Plan (either in full or monthly) In its favour, the standard and ultra-wide lenses used in good light are capable of making punchy yet natural pictures with good tones and sharp detail from centre to edges. That ultra-wide angle lens comes in handy more often than you might expect. The 8.3 5G can shoot 4K HDR video at 30fps, and there’s also a special “Action Cam” mode with super-steady stabilisation at 60fps at lower resolutions. I didn’t have an older Nokia phone on hand to directly compare but wind noise reduction is supposed to be more effective this year and you can also apply anamorphic video effects such as lens flare – JJ Abrams will be pleased. Here's comparison images, one of the 64 megapixels Pro photo mode and the other is the standard 16 megapixels resolution. You can turn off this feature in the settings, but you can’t reprogram it to do anything else, meaning you’re left with a completely superfluous button. It seems like an odd choice by HMD Global to introduce this on the Nokia 8.3 5G, and we can’t see many people finding it useful. The blur effect is seen live, so you know what to expect once the photo is taken. For the best part, blur is applied really well. There's also a choice of various 'Zeiss' blur effects, including Classic, Smooth, Swirl, Modern, Star and Heart and a slider to manually select the severity of the blur effect. We had fun experimenting here. The difference between identical RAW and JPEG images at various ISO settings viewed side by side is interesting. Noise reduction at higher ISO settings is erratic for JPEG images taken in low contrast light. If you're serious about a picture, it is well worth opting for RAW format (the phone will record JPEG simultaneously anyway). There are 8 ISO settings available on the Nokia 8.3 5G. These crops demonstrate the image quality at each setting for both JPEG and RAW file formats. JPEG The auto mode is capable of taking decent photos for use on social media. Images are generally sharp and the camera app/shutter speeds and auto focus are nice and snappy. Images also don’t feel massively over-processed, which is a common problem on most phones at this price. But colours and dynamic range aren’t on a par with what you’ll get on a Pixel 5 and generally can look a little dull compared to some competitors. Flip the phone around and the rear has a lovely 'Polar Night' finish. The appearance of this multi-tone rich blue colour evolves as its angle is shifted from your viewpoint. Gorgeous.
