About this deal

The Adeptus Custodes are, as we’ve said earlier in this article, an army made of a small number of units. So, to balance this out, it’s clear Games Workshop has ensured each individual Adeptus Custodes model sings. From the sheer level of detail on your so-called ‘basic troops’, the Custodian Guards, to the fluid, aggressive styling of the ornate Dawneagle jetbikes, every Adeptus Custodes model is a wonder to behold, that only gets better, the closer you get to it.

This isn’t particularly complicated (though there are some other tools that interact with it) but is pretty good. The first thing to note is that you make this choice every Fight Phase, so if you’re doing lots of charges and expecting to clean up in Fight First during your turn you can take one of the aggressive options, then in your opponent’s turn use Kaptaris when receiving counter-charges. Whilewe’ve not yet updated this section to fully reflect the 9th Edition Adeptus Custodes codex (watch out for that soon),it’s worth reflecting how the latest edition’sgame systems already complemented theCustodes’ stunning models, guiding how they play best. Many of their rules (to be found in the 8th Edition codex and the Psychic Awakening: War of the Spider books) still stood strong in pre-full-Custodes-codex 9th Edition.

Datasheets

Brawling MSUs: Small units of Allarus and Wardens have an actual role to play in pressuring the opponent.

Emissaries Imperatus - They carry the Emperor's messages both spoken and physical around the Imperium. They have a fighting style trait that means they always fight first if they start the fight phase within engagement range of an enemy unit. Well, this doesn’t have the highest value we’ve seen, but pretty close to a lot of the boxes and still decent for the price. However, with such a strong focus on the Sisters of Silence, if you don’t want them, this isn’t really for you.

If you’d rather learn a little about all the 40k races, try our overall Warhammer 40k factions guide – but, if you’re looking to start an Adeptus Custodes army, or simply want to know more about who they are in the game’s ever-evolving story, read on. Custodes have a lot of Character choices – a couple of powerful named leaders, three flavours of Shield Captain, the mighty Blade Champion and a couple of Sisters of Silence choices. Purge Corps Deltic-9 is led by a Tech-Priest Manipulus by the name of Skand, who goes to war protected from enemy fire by a squad of 10 Skitarii Vanguard . Manipulus Skand can choose to deploy with the Aspergilla of Tarentum Enhancement to mist his allies with an energy-diffusing oil that improves survivability, or he can boost his bodyguards’ weapons with extra range and cover-penetrating capabilities using Overcharged Electropositors .

Blade Champion: The Blade Champion keeps his assortment of terrifying melee profiles, and gains built-in re-rolls of Advance/Charge for his unit, a once-per-game Advance/Charge and free Heroic Interventions, creating a nightmare board control tool. Land Raiders: You very, very obviously want to Assault Ramp Custodians into battle, and adding big shots can only help. You’re probably going to want to attach your Captains to your Terminator/Hectaeron guard unit and another to the 4 man Guardian squad with the Vexilla. Keep this in mind when you’re deploying your units. You generally want your vanguard near the center so they aren’t having to run the length of the table to engage. You’re going to want these lethal units in combat ASAP.The codex includes stratagems, battlefield abilities that can be used during the game, warlord traits, unique abilities given to your armies' leader, and relics, powerful equipment that can be given to your armies' characters. These can be taken for any Adeptus Custodes army, and the codex also includes unique stratagems, warlord traits, and relics for six different shield hosts, along with two fighting style traits for each. Hot on the heels of our Shadow Throne preview, the narrative box set for Warhammer 40K, which saw the nefarious infiltration of humanities' homeworld by the Genestealer Cults, met with force from the Emperor's golden protectors, the Adeptus Custodes, this month sees the release of the full rules codexes for both factions. In this article, we'll have a look at what the Adeptus Custodes Codex contains, the rules, and what if any differences there are from those presented in the Shadow Throne booklet. Who Are The Adeptus Custodes? So you bought the Age of Darkness Box…you painted your Son’s of Horus or your Imperial Fists and they’re cool but they’re not Custodes cool. Here’s how to get started with The Ten Thousand.

The Legio Custodes were the first genetically and psychologically altered creations created by the Emperor, predating even the Thunder Warriors (the hulking proto-Space Marines that would be his final instrument in conquering Terra). The warriors of the Legio Custodes were fierce creations, each towering over baseline humans, and possessing many qualities that made them stronger, faster, more intelligent, longer lived, and just plain better than their normal human cousins. The new Adeptus Custodes was generally well received, adding more customisable combat rules – in the form of Martial Ka’tah battle stances– togive players of thelow-model count, ultra-elite Custodes army more gameplay choices and make their handful of warriors operate in a more distinctive and deadly fashion. Just as a reminder – this review does not cover Forge World units. Custodes have, by volume, one of the biggest Forge World ranges out there, so a lot of this could change depending on what those units bring to the table, particularly in the area of anti-tank. Five Coolest Units The Custodes Index Detachment provides an assortment of re-worked versions of some of their iconic toys from 9th Edition, broadly focused on fighting for board control.

Adeptus Custodes tactics

Being Captain-General is a heavy responsibility for any shoulders, even the metres-wide set you’ll find on a Custodian. Not only is Trajann Valoris responsible for the defence of the Sol System, Terra, the Imperial Palace, and the Emperor, he also oversees the actions of all Custodes, planning their sorties and missions personally. If that wasn’t all, he’s also a High Lord of Terra, bringing governance of the Imperium into his daily role. From there, you should be able to field a pretty competitive army that can deal damage, withstand hellfire, and take objectives. You’ll be fast on your feet as well as able to form a doughty battleline. If you’ve come this far and completed the above list, it may be a time to dip a toe into ForgeWorld’s offerings, as some of their dreadnoughts and vehicles are simply stunning – but be warned that you’ll pay a considerable price for them. The siege and the Heresy ended in the same moment, with the slaying of Horus, and the mortal wounding and ruination of the Emperor. His life was extended beyond all natural measure through use of the Golden Throne, and, ever since, the Adeptus Custodes have stood watch over him, deciding who enters the holy throne room, and turning away those they deem unworthy. Now I suppose the hard decision is what to do with the Allarus Terminators. I think they are suitable proxies for either Hectaeron Guard or Aquilon Terminators with some minor kitbashing. You can easily slap some standard terminator arms on them to give them claws, a fist and bolter, or flamer. You could also hope beyond hope that they end up in the Liber Imperium PDF along with the Vertus Praetor jetbikes. Though this author doesn’t foresee them being included. Who knows.
