For me, it is a reflection of the past in the present, when I read "insufficient food and unwholesome living are the main causes of disease among these small patients. Any one familiar with Dickens' later novels can see the ideas here which are developed in his later work. A collection of Dickens' early short stories based on his famous night walks, some of which span a distance of 20-30 miles in a single walk. Even at times during desolate hours this area was in state of restlessness with cleaners (as well as arguable the mouse) cleaning the streets for the morning tourists and workers, builders repairing streets and as Matthew Beaumont describes the people at this as those either ‘running out of time or those with time to burn’. A good read and a nice collection to dip into if you have never read any Dickens before and just want to have an idea of his writing style, before embarking on his, much longer, novels.

At one point, though I was walking on a street that was wide and bright the sound of the autumn leaves startled me because I had initially no idea where the sound was coming from. It's eye-opening to read Dickens' short pieces, and remember that before he became a part of foundational literature, he wrote odd pieces to help him process his insomnia and pay the bills.

You would also find fast food takeaways that were open till late and foxes rummaging through people’s bin. Bethlehem hospital itself had moved to different areas around London throughout the centuries but during Dickens time would have been where the IWM is now.

His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Only very few people are out and about and he cherishes what little contact he has, with the man on the toll bridge for example.Even if you now the City of London very well (like me) you will get new inspiration by joining Dickens on his walks through town.
