I would use the book in lower or upper KS2 where I think children will be more able to engage with the longer story and be interested in ways in which they can help the environment such as by planting trees. There are many learning opportunities linked to this books; History - how traditions have changed, life in the past, predictions for the future. The beautiful, child-friendly illustrations accompany the story and help to reinforce the children’s understanding of climate change. This vital and timely story is paired with Jim Field's emotive illustrations in this gorgeous Christmas picture book, perfect for the whole family to share.

Trees, animals, sea pollution, air, ice caps and sea-life are just some of the aspects of earth that Grandpa talks about in his letter to Mia.

Within this letter are personal memories; of the times they spent in the garden finding frogs, planting seeds and watching closely as nature unfolds its' wonder in that quiet, determined way nature has.

I wanted the design of the characters to be quite simple, they would be less expressive and exaggerated compared to the usual animal characters I illustrate in picture books. If I could crack a realism feel to the lighting and mood then I felt it would work well with Michael’s beautiful words. Renowned children's author Michael Morpurgo teams up with bestselling illustrator Jim Field in this stunning Christmas picture book. Grandpa explains to Mia the importance of looking after the earth by relating this to things they have enjoyed doing together.I had such high hopes of a beautiful Christmas story about a young girl and her grandpa, hoping to bring back memories of my own. A gorgeous hardback with beautiful dust jacket, the illustrations are wonderful and the story grabbed my heart and made me sit up and take notice. The letter talks about how the Grandad loves his Granddaughter and how we are destroying the planet and how he hopes that will change.

The story then moves onto him wishing that Mia can continue her love for others and nature but he worries for the future of the planet. Author Guy Bass introduces SCRAP, about one robot who tried to protect the humans on his planet against an army of robots. This vital and timely story is paired with Jim Fields emotive illustrations in this gorgeous Christmas picture book, perfect for the whole family to share. The story begins with Mia, a girl who follows a family tradition year after year; placing a letter from her Grandpa on the tree.

Grandpa had one big wish for his little grandchild, that she would love the earth and learn to respect it. Apart from the first and last pages where it shows the family at Christmas, none of the book is set in winter. That’s when finding the right pose for the characters is absolutely key to striking the right emotional chord in the scene. I loved this book; and I bought two:- for each of my great grandchildren to be read to them by their own grandpas.
