About this deal

The quality of the conversion here is top-notch, with the join between Suzuki’s work and Yomper’s barely perceptible. He is generous in his praise of other units, where praise is due, but never shirks from criticism where it is needed. Amidst the numerous books about the Falklands conflict, this is the first from a company commander – in this case X Ray Company, 45 Commando, Royal Marines. The bold but unilateral move forward, as a result of a telephone conversation, to Fitzroy and Bluff Cove by 2 Para in the Chinook is shown as unbalancing logistics and having all sorts of unfortunate consequences, including Sir Galahad. Meanwhile, the Yomper 225B Bergen is a ‘ute type’ truck with short-wheelbase (SWB) chassis but extended load bed, 50mm lift and choice of 350kg or 500kg payload capacity.

When his men arrived, worn out by the long trek, they would have to go into immediate action against an enemy well prepared and supported by field artillery. His account is articulate, poignant and precise, even though 30 years have now elapsed since the events he describes. Not exactly bargain basement, but these things have bespoke bodywork and proper type approval – and that still represents a chunky saving over a modern full-size pickup.

The Yomper 225Y Rustler is similar to the Bergen but without the extended load bed and with the lift kit only optional. At the same time, it’s a step above ATVs like the Polaris Ranger or Honda Pioneer, being properly road-legal and capable of longer trips if needed. This new book, by retired Brigadier RM, Ian Gardiner, marks the thirtieth anniversary of the Falkland war. Ian Gardiner provides a vivid insight into the conflict and not just into strategy, tactics and the actual fighting.

Today's crossword puzzle clue is a general knowledge one: Type of bag used by hikers, students, endurance athletes, yompers, countryside picnickers etc. From San Carlos they were sent to Teal Inlet, where an Argentine attack had destroyed 45 Commando’s anti-tank missile launchers.Agricultural specification grassland or moorland specific flotation tyres and 3 inch lift kit are avalible for this model. Petty Officer Pete Holdgate: Commando photographer Pete Holdgate later became a local newspaper picture editor. You don’t have to be a military man to enjoy Ian Gardiner’s The Yompers, the first memoir of the Falklands War to be written from behind the gun sights by a career Royal Marine.

Various backronymic definitions have however been proposed, including "young officers marching pace", "your own marching pace" and a connection with the term yump used in rally-driving in the sense of "to leave the ground when taking a crest at speed", apparently a Scandinavian pronunciation of jump. Lacking helicopters and short of food, they 'yomped' in appalling weather carrying overloaded rucksacks, across ground which threatened to break legs and ankles at every step.Put simply, it is a masterpiece of narrative on the challenges as well as the risks of the profession of arms and the best yet to emerge from the Falklands War of thirty years ago. They went on to fight the crucial night battle for Two Sisters, the twin 1,000 foot high peaks which were keys to the defensive positions around Stanley. It is of course based on the third-generation Suzuki Jimny, but its makers say it’s more than just a pickup conversion.
