Indeed, it has to be said that after Sally is indeed later found murdered that this mystery begins to lag somewhat. She had pretended to be unmarried because revealing her marriage would have jeopardised her husband's job and she liked to 'play with people'.

It also features a couple of topless scenes involving Marsden and Frazer that was likely meant to add a bit of phwoar factor in but is more likely to see women (and men) running screaming from the room at the sight of such skinny pasty bodies. This is a four-part, star-packed dramatisation of her first novel, published in 1962, in which she created her famous detective Adam Dalgliesh. In what seems an astonishing stroke of luck she meets Dr Stephen Maxie (Rupert Frazer) on a train, who hears what happened to her and hires her to work at his family's country home. The novel was generally very well received by critics although the author later described it as her least favourite among her books.Sally had blackmailed her uncle (who unbeknownst to her had spent her modest trust fund) into giving her 30 pounds.

Overall this is a well acted mystery that starts well but the death of one of it's main characters impacts somewhat on the remainder of the episodes. Deborah later visits Stephen at the hospital where he works and sees her brother talking with Sally. It starred Roy Marsden as Adam Dalgliesh, John Vine as Inspector John Massingham (instead of Detective Sergeant Martin), Phyllis Calvert as Eleanor Maxie, Rupert Frazer as Stephen Maxie, Mel Martin as Deborah Riscoe, Julian Glover as Felix Hearne, and Kim Thomson as Sally Jupp. It details the investigations into the death of a young, ambitious maid, surrounded by a family which has reasons to want her gone – or dead. BBC Radio 4 produced a radio serial, with Hugh Grant as Felix, Robin Ellis as Dalgliesh and Siân Phillips as Mrs Maxie, releasing it on CD shortly after airing. As the television adaptation was set contemporaneously but the characters' ages had to remain unchanged, Felix Hearne's military service was relocated to Cyprus and a secondary storyline was added about Cypriot drug-dealers.

And her actions are constantly shifty, including her secret meetings with village lad Derek Pullen (Robert Glenister), who gives her letters postmarked Venezuela. In a 1966 book review, Anthony Boucher of The New York Times wrote "This is a literate and not unpromising first novel, but modeled firmly upon the detective story of 30 years ago at its dullest. The Maxie household at the country house seem ordinary enough however, with Eleanor Maxie (Phyllis Calvert) looking after her ailing husband upstairs, while children Stephen and Deborah (Mel Martin) argue over whether to sell the house or not.You know you can't really trust her and her character is not particularly nice, but with Thomson in the role you can't help liking her in some strange way.

Later she goes down to change her baby and discovers the dead body of Stavros on the stairs and hears someone running away.Cover Her Face was adapted for television in 1985, starring Roy Marsden, Phyllis Calvert and Mel Martin. The pace is deliberate, the characterization of the members of an English county family very well done, and the central character of Sally Jupp – a servant girl with imagination and a love of power – most unusual but compelling. Straight away the curiosity is aroused, but it is not the only suspicious activity going on in the village. It's surprising therefore to see during the car sequences involving Dalgliesh and Massingham some stage backdrops used that are painfully obvious. D. James, one of the masters of British crime fiction, comes the debut novel that introduced Scotland Yard detective Adam Dalgliesh.
