Get some old rope similar to the long line. Set a target of 2 weeks. If in two weeks of training the dog has not ignored you cut a 1/4 of the length off. The train for another two weeks and repeat cutting a 1/4 off the line. For some dogs, you might be able to work through these techniques on your own and achieve great success in a matter of weeks. For other dogs, it’s advisable to get help from an animal behaviorist or a professional dog trainer with leash reactivity experience. Your dog might also benefit from a consult with a veterinary behaviorist. If your dog is too worked up to learn, medication can control their arousal levels during training allowing them to make more progress. Long-lines are great for giving your dog more freedom whilst still having some control of what they are doing. They’re a safe and effective way to practice recall training before letting your dog off lead completely as they give them more freedom and the feeling of being off lead. Learn to handle the long line by making loops in the line and letting those out as required. Best to practice without a dog attached initially.
