There are many different fantastic textured papers available, with brands like G.F Smith producing huge ranges of beautiful papers. Specialist textured papers are also often colored too, although bright white textured papers are available. We love the unique texture and feel of this handmade paper. It’s perfect for adding a creative touch to any project and the fact that it’s sustainably sourced and recycled makes it even better.

While all of the finishes above feel smooth to the touch, smooth paper is designed to be as smooth and seamless as possible. Many people think that it feels like the paper is texture-free. It can be valuable for a variety of purposes and make a great impression thanks to the remarkably smooth feel. The most commonly requested paper we print onto is a pale cream “watercolour” type paper, which is usually used for invitation printing. In fact, we'd say that the vast majority of textured paper enquiries we receive are for exactly this purpose! With that in mind, we’ll use this as an example as we go along and look at the pros and cons of using textured papers. The vast majority of printing is done onto smooth white paper, be it gloss, silk or uncoated. This is perfectly fine for most types of printing, and since many different paper weights are available there is usually sufficient choice for most applications. It’s when creativity comes into play that other kinds of paper are considered and paper with a textured finish is often one of the first that comes to mind. Especially if you want to design a flyer, business card or leafletthat stands out from the competition. It isn’t always easy to choose the right texture of paper, as there are many options for finishes, weight, and size. Think critically about what message you want to convey. For an event like a wedding, linen paper with crisp lettering could make an elegant first impression. However, if the event is a children’s birthday party, smooth and glossy paper might be a better fit. It is eco-friendly and made from recycled cotton rags, which is great for those who are environmentally conscious. The paper is easy to use and is compatible with both inkjet and copier printers, making it a versatile option for all your printing needs. If you’re printing color images onto colored paper, then it's important to be aware that the color of the paper will affect the colors in the print. The lithographic printing process uses wet inks and rubber rollers, and thus is much better for use with textured papers. Using these in combination, the litho printing process can better apply the ink to all those tiny recesses in textured paper, creating a cleaner and more thorough print. If you’re printing colour images onto coloured paper, then it's important to be aware that the colour of the paper will affect the colours in the print.

The paper is versatile and can be used for a variety of purposes, including calligraphy, sketching, painting, and crafting. The paper is textured, which may not be suitable for those who prefer a smoother surface for their printing needs. The linen finish on both sides of the sheet gives a premium look and feel to your printed projects. This unique paper texture is similar to what you’ll find on handmade paper, as laid paper features a subtle grid pattern that feels bespoke and handmade. Laid paper is very versatile and looks beautiful for printing stationery, brochures, and invitations. We also have an article about printing onto coloured paperIt covers digital printing, but the effect is the same for litho printing too.If you’re looking for more of an olde-worlde look, it's possible that the issues with digital printing in this area could actually make your prints look better. As ever, you’ll need to run some print tests, and at least with digital print you can do this cheaply. (This can be great for digital poster printing, for example.)

Many people assume that all paper is the same, but that could not be further from the truth. In reality, just like certain types of fabric are best suited for specific garments, each texture of paper can be appropriate for a unique type of project.

Custom Luxury Textured Labels

The handmade 100% cotton paper is acid-free, chemical-free and tree-free, making it an environmentally sensitive option for your printing needs. The only real problem with litho is cost. Litho machines have to be set up prior to each print job, so unless you want to pay a full setup charge just to look at a couple of test prints, you most likely won't know what the finished result will look like until they’re all done. Eggshell, Felt and Stucco are textures that are manufactured with patterns pre-engrained in them as part of the paper-making process. These are available in the following weights/coating: It’s unfortunate, but as textured papers are harder to manufacture and made in much smaller quantities than regular gloss, silk and uncoated paper, they are far more expensive.

It’s important to note that while adding a linen texture is a fantastic way to elevate your project, it can also impact your artwork – specifically when used in conjunction with metallic ink. The reflective quality of both the linen texture and the metallic ink on small text hurts the legibility. This is a rare combination, but something to keep in mind if you plan on using any of these options. In the examples below the metallic ink on the text alone poses no issue, but in combination with the linen texture it becomes a struggle to read in certain lights. Digital printing may not be suitable for many types of textured paper, but some people do like the mottled effect it can give! The paper is 100% handmade, making it unique and special. (Greate for envelopes and other crafty projects!)
