About this deal

That doesn’t make them less impressive and the lower parts, certainly of the ziggurat, are genuinely thousands of years old so still worth a visit. Come down the travelators, exit Sainsbury's, turn right and follow the pedestrianised walkway to Crown Walk and turn right - and Coles will be right in front of you. Always a joy to join Palin on another travel, even when it's one that is shorter than previous epics (he is almost 80 now), and one that has a more sombre tone thanks to the war riven background to Iraq. A lovely book, that brought back terrific memories of earlier Michael Palin journeys in my childhood.

And he considers the role that Iraq's other great natural resource - oil - plays in both providing wealth and threatening political stability.

Overall, a good book to read if you have the intention of visiting Iraq or want to know a little more about how you might experience Iraq, just as Palin experienced it. His books include accounts of his journeys, novels (Hemingway's Chair and The Truth) and several volumes of diaries. At this point, it looks like it will be difficult to see the tv mini-series from this side of the Atlantic. The book is quite short, just 171 pages and a lot of those have half and half text and photographs of the trip, I therefore read it in about two and a half hours.

This was his first documentary travelogue since visiting North Korea in 2018 which was equally short and it is now eleven years since his last trip lasting multiple months which saw him explore Brasil. Now he shares the journal he meticulously kept during his trip, in which he describes the very varied places he visited, the people he met and the impressions he formed of a country that few outsiders now venture to see.The first thing to say about this book is visually it's stunningly beautiful with countless images woven on nearly every single page.

I doubt I'll get there unless either, the country becomes completely "normal" or I have Palin's pedigree. At the next he would be visiting the war-torn city of Mosul, or learning about the horrific Speicher massacre in Tikrit. Intended to be a companion piece he did for British TV, which I haven't seen, this is parts of a diary and recordings the Python alumni made on his recent trip to Iraq. Michael Palin’s latest travel adventure took place March 2022 and consisted of a short (two week) trip to Iraq, he was after all seventy eight when he made the journey and the epic trips from the 1980’s and 90’s are probably behind him now but this was still a fascinating read.Bookplates are official labels which are signed by the author and then fixed to the title page of the book.

Having said that I really enjoyed the book and when I started it was difficult to put down, the urge to just read another chapter was always there and as each chapter was a days journey it felt even more like a diary and you felt you were progressing down Iraq along with the small team making the films. For years, it seemed 2012's Brazil was to be Michael Palin's swansong - and one in which he moved away from his trademark celebration of travel and movement and into a more documentary format, rocking up in convenient places to deliver a piece to camera.
