About this deal

You can also jump to our buyer’ guide to lights for more information on lights, from lumen output to beam width. With five LED lights and a whopping 6,500 lumens total claimed output, the Magicshine Monteer 6500 is a seriously capable unit. Installing or removing these types of mounts can often be a much more involved process though, sometimes even requiring a specific tool (such as a small hex key). The Lezyne Lite Drive 1000XL front and Lezyne KTV Pro Drive 75 rear lights are super well-made. Immediate Media The Light & Motion Seca Comp 2000 is a great choice for casual night rides. Lights will often have either a spot or flood pattern. Spot patterns highlight details in front of you in great detail. Flood patterns disperse the light over a wider area and can give you a better sense of what’s around you. Some lights use a mixture of both.

The clamp is fiddly and the charging cable is proprietary, but otherwise, this is a great light for road and gravel night riding. This isn’t necessarily a problem in itself, but many road cyclists won’t want something overly large to spoil the sleek looks of their road bike or clutter the handlebar. Likewise, some commuters will want lights that are small enough to be stuffed easily into a work bag. A helmet light helps spot the landing when the bar light is shining up in a tree somewhere. All-in-one Options As you can see they are different, but not to the extent found on some other lights, for example the Ravemen PR1600 that's one of our current favourites. That light has a flattened beam pattern on one lens to reduce glare for oncoming traffic; both of the Magicshine's beams are round, so you end up throwing a fair bit of your light at the sky.

Although it’s easy to tap the on/off button to show the battery life indicator, you have to cycle through all nine modes to change from low to high beam. The Volt 6000 is perfect if your shuttle vehicle is a Porsche. Kidding. Get this beast if night riding is life and you want a super wide beam angle that makes it impossible for sneaky bears to jump out at you from the side of the trail. Exposure has been making high-performance, high-tech lights in the UK for over a decade and is adding more power and extra functionality year by year. Light output isn’t the only factor to consider, beam patterns are just as important. Some lights project their output into one specific area, illuminating everything within that space with exceptional detail, but that’s frequently at the expense of broader coverage. The Titan 4000 doesn’t force buyers to choose between brightness and battery life. Get the 8-cell battery and have both, you greedy SOB. claimed. For me it less about the lumens, but more about how it uses the light on the trail. Tell us about the mounting. Is it faffy? Does it all stay in place? The Moon Meteor Storm Pro is a USB rechargeable front light with 1700 Lumen output and a Boost mode that blasts out 2000 Lumens for 10 seconds. Lights with multiple lenses or beam reflectors can combine spot and flood outputs, with the further option to toggle between them. In theory, lights with both beam patterns are the best of both worlds. Beam comparison

Unfortunately, there’s no pulse mode and it’s a little fiddly to use on the move, but the X-Pro is otherwise a very useful rear light. Run time on full power was slightly lower than claimed by Knog, but at 1 hour 40 minutes was nevertheless good for a 75-lumen rear light. It misses out on a five-star rating because it’s pretty expensive and the beam spread isn’t quite perfect, but if you need this sort of power you’ll be very impressed. In its Overdrive setting, the Macro Drive is a bright beast of a light. Russell Burton / Immediate Media Our test unit’s thermal throttling was quite sensitive, and after two minutes of being stationary with the light on max power in 14°C temperatures, it reduced output to the middle setting. The Reflex++ mode senses movement, adjusting power output to the difficulty of the trail. Stop riding, or cruise along a smooth section of trail, and the light dims slowly so your eyes can adjust.
