The Ubiquiti UniFi US-8is a non-PoE 8 port gigabit switch, which supports PoE passthrough. It is perfect for cleanly adding Ethernet ports where needed, all in a compact form factor.Alike the other UniFi Switches, the US-8is fully manageable, delivering robust performance for your network. I bought this primarily to allow me to setup UniFi WiFi WAP at a small office location. It works great to unify multiple wired networks via VLAN into a trunk that their wireless access points (WAP) can use. The US-8-60W is an 8-port gigabit switch with four 802.3af PoE ports. Its auto-sensing PoE ports deliver up to 15.4W of power per port. The included Mounting Accessories support any orientation wall-mount and desk/shelf mounting. Cloud Controllerpair) PoE output is Off by default. Enabling PoE output (via the UniFi Network Application) requires 24W input power via PoE In or DC input. The only downside is that this thing is fanless, and like many fanless network appliances it feels hot to me. I set up a small fan to blow air onto the wall where I mounted it all, which maybe isn’t necessary but certainly made me feel more comfortable :)

WARNING: When both PoE In and DC Input are connected, the highest voltage power of the two will immediately pass through to PoE Out (if enabled). I found this very useful where I had only one ethernet drop to an area for a PoE cam and wanted to add a Smart TV via ethernet without losing the PoE cam.

PoE Adapters Since this is a PoE-powered switch -- if you have a "core" switch that provides PoE, you can power this little US-8 via PoE via the core and without a wall adapter. Why would you want this feature? I have my core switch on a large UPS that can power it for hours. By using PoE-powered edge switches, those edge switches stay powered in a power failure without having to put a UPS at each one. Also, I have some places where I don't have wall power handy. That said, the US-8 comes with a regular wall transformer that can power the switch instead of input PoE. I did some testing and the US-8 unfortunately will NOT hot-swap between PoE power and wall power. So if your US-8 first powered up with the wall adapter but also has PoE input power, and you unplug the wall adapter, the switch has to reset itself (and drop connectivity) to transition to using the PoE input power.
