About this deal

Whitbread is an energetic, robust lady with tremendous physical power and stamina, as well as tremendous tenacity and mental fearlessness. An early campaigner against drug use in athletics, Paish went on to coach cricket and rugby and was awarded an MBE in 2005. Whitbread, on the other hand, performed below average at the 1988 Olympics, finishing second with a throw four meters short of Petra Felke’s. Many of Fatima's great sporting moments are covered in detail, including her world javelin record in Stuttgart and her World Championship win in Rome. Then before her came a number of very famous British women athletes that inspired me when going through the history of woman’s athletes.

Here, her teammate, Sanderson was pitched against her in a game of wits that saw them running on neck-to-neck. Fatima Whitbread is a former world champion javelin thrower who successfully won silver and bronze at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games and the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Games. The series featured the celebrities' own reflections, and also highlighted specific children, inviting viewers to contact the programme if they were interesting in fostering or adopting them. I was abandoned as a baby, and some would say left to die, in a flat in London, and a neighbour heard that baby crying for a couple of days and didn’t see anyone coming or going, so she reported it,’ she said. The sense of loss, of identity and purpose, and then having to reinvent yourself in something that fills that void and the passion you had, is very hard.

I shouldn’t have gone to that Olympics, but I managed to pull on all my reserves and I came away with the silver medal. LA was great from a British point of view," Whitbread tells OSM, "but for me it was affected by the absence of East Germany's Petra Felke, the best in the world at that time. In all, Sanderson placed higher in 27 of the 45 times that they faced each other in competition, although Whitbread had the better results of the pair from 1984 to 1987.Furthermore, Fatima also has published two autobiographies written with Adrianne Blue, “Fatima: The Autobiography of Fatima Whitbread” in 1988, and “Survivor: The Shocking and Inspiring Story of a True Champion” in 2012. She was also known for her rivalry with fellow British javelin thrower Tessa Sanderson, who won the gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles with Whitbread finishing in bronze medal position.

It was important for me to be able to prove that I could be a good mum and break the mould of what I’d been through. In 1979 Fatima Whitbread became the first British thrower to win a European Junior title and in 1981 she broke into world class, improving from 60. In 2014, she appeared on Celebrity Blockbusters on Challenge, and the following year took part in the ITV sports show Eternal Glory, but was the first celebrity to be eliminated. Norman had been implicated by the coroner in the 1994 suicide of Cliff Temple, a Sunday Times journalist who had been investigating Norman’s conduct as promotions officer of the British Athletics Federation. It was all but secured with the 28-year-old's first throw, so, she tells OSM, she had time to offer some impromptu coaching.
