About this deal

Big wall climbers and climbers on multi-day multi-pitch climbs and alpine climbs also will need wag bags. The top of the bivvy bag completely zips up, but there is no way of keeping it off your face, and sleeping can get difficult. On warmer nights this isn’t a problem as you can open more of a gap. As a result, we would say this is three season only, but of course your mileage may vary! What you really get with the Geertop is flexibility. It can be set up simply as a standalone netted structure to sit in if the midges are getting at you or the additional outer waterproof camo fly can be added to keep the rain off.

Ripstop outer with 5000mm hydrostatic head / 5000g/m2 breathability / 70D Ripstop floor / 8.5mm aluminium poles / supplied with ultralight alloy pegs. Foil blankets (sometimes referred to as thermal blankets, space blankets or emergency blankets) are a lightweight mylar and aluminium covering commonly used by hikers, outdoor athletes, surgeons and first aid responders to keep the wearer warm in specific situations. They work by reflecting the wearers body heat, trapping it inside the blanket. Low weight and a compact shape are the most important factors for runners, since a bulky or heavy bag makes running feel awkward and also more strenuous. Is a bivvy better than a tent? This made it into our Outdoor 100 for 2022, with our Test Team all impressed by its superb fabric and lightweight qualities. I took my Hilleberg Soulo into the mountains to give it a good test in wind and rain and the weather gods obliged with 60km/h winds and hours of heavy rain

These contain chemicals that make the human waste inside inert, so they are safe in normal dumpsters. Home made WAG bags or bags without the EPA commercial rating can only go in designated human waste dumpsters, which are located at the trailhead. Just as I'd got the tent up, the peg-loop webbing on one of the corners broke - probably due to me using multiple pegs instead of just one (but using just one peg doesn't work, so what can you do). I made a new loop with an overhand knot, which held fine. During the night the poles started sliding and falling down, and this continued all through the night and into the next morning. And why on earth would you use one when tents exist? Well, such an approach – with your head open to the elements – offers an even more intimate interaction with the wild. The sounds of night creatures are unmuffled, the stars dazzle above you, and your senses are highly attuned to every raindrop and every gust of wind. Putting the bivy tent up for the first time took me about 10 minutes, but I think I could probably half that with a bit of practice. A short hoop is threaded through the foot region and a longer one up at the head end. The base structure is then pegged out with 6 pegs and the fly sheet added on top. This is then also pegged with a couple of guy ropes if it is windy. It feels incredibly well made and sturdy, although I do struggle with the weight of it on top of my winter sleep system, so I won't be able to walk too far with this tent. I've included some specs in the video. Here's a few things that I like and dislike about this tent so far..How much heat it holds in - in my experience it is 4-5 °C warmer inside the tent than outside, and that's with a ventilation panel open too. This makes a huge difference in cold conditions If you’ve ever seen news photos or videos from an emergency event, you may have seen paramedics wrapping victims in what looks like a thin blanket of aluminium foil. These foil blankets help victims to regulate their body temperature while they receive medical attention, but how exactly do they work? When does a bivvy bag turn into a one person tent, and does it matter? Our answer is “when it uses two fibre glass poles rather than one or a separate fly sheet”, but no it doesn’t matter. Good gear and simple practices will save you the trouble of collecting firewood and trying to maintain a fire through the night. While some hardcore traditionalists might argue it’s too much luxury, I wouldn’t mind having space to read a book on a rainy afternoon. Bivvy shelters are a modern take on minimalism and generally add on one Featherlite head pole to put things into shape. There’s still not enough room to sit up inside, but you’ll be able to scratch your nose in peace.

One thing we didn't like about the Biffy Bag is the requirement to tie your own knot instead of a pull on a string to tighten as found in the Restop 2. It puts a lot of pressure on the user to feel like that knot is good enough to keep the contents in. Not to mention that once you've tied your knot, it's near impossible to undo should you have to use the bag again. This is a one-use bag.

Convection: Convective heat loss is the transfer of heat from a body to moving particles, typically the air. Air particles close to the skin are warmed by body heat via conduction, and this heat is carried away from the body by ambient air currents. Convective heat loss outdoors is commonly called “wind chill factor.” Using a bivi bag can be a little like wearing a waterproof parka coat in the winter. The Bush Pro weighs in at a respectable 560g and has fully taped seams to aid with the water proofing. The nylon material is extremely sturdy and will not rip or tear easily.
