About this deal

I'm portrayed as kind of a bullying, cynical, double-crossing, devious manipulator which is bad, but then when you add to that I behave in a sexist way and a way that seems to mock Richard III's disabilities, you start to get into the realm of defamation. And the only way the film-makers have been able to do that is by artificially removing all the key female academic leads from the story. She takes on Britain's most eminent historians, forcing them to rethink the legacy of one of the most controversial rulers in English history. Principal photography began in April of that year, [8] and took place across a variety of locations in the Edinburgh area, including Morningside [9] and Newtongrange.

None of which affects the film’s evident dramatic appeal, as Hawkins breathes tremulously vulnerable life into a character who overcomes apparently insurmountable obstacles to prove to the world that she deserves to be taken seriously – the true heart of the piece. So, after a couple of pub meetings with fellow Ricardians (self-described oddballs and misfits), she’s banging on the doors of the establishment, seeking funding to dig up Richard’s bones, which she has become convinced lie under a car park in Leicester. It's the story of how Philippa Langley, burdened with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, a dead marriage, and the general disdain of those around her found the burial site of King Richard III. The Lost King is the life-affirming true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country's most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England's history. The Lost King was produced by Pathé, Baby Cow, BBC Film and Ingenious Media, and distributed by Pathé in France and Switzerland as a standalone distributor, and in the UK via Warner Bros. Likewise, Heat [18] and iNews [19] gave the film four out of five stars, with the latter stating "Coogan is marvellous". Sent before my time into this breathing world,” is how Shakespeare’s Richard famously describes himself, “scarce half made up, and that so lamely and unfashionable that dogs bark at me. In one particularly memorable scene from Philomena, the cruel Sister Hildegarde seethes to Sixsmith that “those girls have nobody to blame but themselves and their own carnal incontinence”, yet in actuality the real Hildegarde died several years before Sixsmith’s investigations began.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave the film two stars out of five, commenting on the "uneven" nature of the script and that scenes with Richard III "make the film odd and unrelaxed", [5] while these scenes were praised in Matthew McMillan's four-star review for The Upcoming, for imbuing the film "with an offbeat allure", describing the film as "a treat […] spearheaded by Hawkins's performance, and guided by the dexterity of Frears's craft". I'm also a bit confused why Alexandre Desplat modeled the opening theme on Bernard Hermann's for NORTH BY NORTHWEST. THE LOST KING is the life-affirming true story of a woman who refused to be ignored and who took on the country's most eminent historians, forcing them to think again about one of the most controversial kings in England's history. She unsuccessfully confronts her male boss about being passed over and also appeals that her myalgic encephalomyelitis (or "ME") has never affected her work. These are words that pierce Philippa’s troubled heart, her ME having left her feeling shunned and ridiculed, her job at risk. Indeed, she formed part of the team interview panel for every single press conference connected to the King. Mark Addy’s portrayal of Dr Richard Buckley, who throws in his lot with Philippa after his own position becomes perilous, may be more amiable, but Buckley too has complained that “there is no truth to our department being under threat of closure or my job being on the line” and describes these plot points as “just nonsense”. He says that by showing a "phalanx of male archaeologists and administrators, interested only in furthering their own careers at Langley's expense", the film portrays science unfairly, and in a manner that is closed to outsiders.
