About this deal

Since 1st October 1997 the law states that HGV height must be indicated inside the cab of a vehicle if the overall travelling height (OTH) of the vehicle or trailer exceeds three metres. This should be done using an HGV height indicator. A height indicator for an HGV must:

I sometimes have to wind legs up slowly if a trailer is dropped so low I struggle to get under it even with air suspension all the way down. And sometimes need to lower a trailer if it's been dropped and is too high. Why don't the DVSA, put pressure on Police Forces, to enforce the Center Lane hogging by the Fuel Savers, why don't the DVSA,Police and Highway Authorities utilise the numerous camera's dotted along the major routes, record and fine those that cause the holdups on our road. Must admit I considered the approach of using trig from the comfort of the cab, but you'd have to be able to see the peak of the uneven load from two adjacent sides (peaks occurring toward the middle of the container and which only modestly exceed the height of the container, may not be visible on two adjacent sides at any reasonable distance), the peak would have to be occluded by the container at not-too-close an angle (i.e. if the peak is near to the edge of the container and clearly exceeds the height of the container even at close range, so that it is only occluded at an angle close to 90 degrees, then it would have to be measured directly to avoid an excessive margin of error), and you'd have to take all observations on a completely level area (because you have no tools capable of correcting for uneven ground), and the top of the container itself would still have to measured and would have to be completely level around its perimeter relative to the ground (or be measured at all the points where it coincides with the lines of observation). Two clear working days notice to Police ( C&U schedule 12, para 4), Attendant required ( C&U Schedule 12, para 2), Marker boards front and rear ( C&U Schedule 12, para 3), Additional lights required during hours of darkness or poor visibility.

Are you HGV height aware?

The table below is a summary of the requirements applicable to loads overhanging the sides of a vehicle as set out in regulation 82 of C&U. Load projection or overall width i) a marker on a side of the load is fitted in the prescribed manner if at least part of it is within 50 mm of a longitudinal plane passing through the point on that side of the load which is furthest from the axis of the vehicle; and i) an end marker, except in the case of a rearward projection which is fitted with a rear marking in accordance with the Lighting Regulations, and

Follow all local regulations and guidelines for measuring the height of HGV vehicles, including any specific procedures or safety protocols. Racing boats propelled by oars, and certain other vehicles have slightly different requirements. For details consult regulation 82 of C&U. 2. Loads overhanging the side of the vehicle Avoid standing or working directly underneath the HGV vehicle while measuring its height to prevent accidents in case of unexpected movements.b) to give warning to the driver of the said motor vehicle and to any person of any danger likely to be caused to any such other person by reason of the presence of the said vehicle or vehicles on the road. Provided that, where three or more vehicles as respects which the conditions in this paragraph are applicable are travelling together in convoy, it shall be a sufficient compliance with this paragraph if only the foremost and rearmost vehicles in the convoy are attended in the manner prescribed in this paragraph. For the purpose of this paragraph when a motor vehicle is drawing a trailer or trailers — If an articulated lorry is pulling a trailer and the trailer is switched during a journey, the OTH may need to be recalculated as follows: In addition, changes to the level of a driving surface, for example where a road has been resurfaced, may affect clearance of an overhead obstruction. e) the extra side markers required by this subparagraph shall also meet the requirements of (i), (iii) and (v) of But how can bridge strikes be avoided? Simply put, the easiest way to avoid bridge strikes is to ensure that a driver is made aware of and is constantly reminded of the height of their HGV. If you feel the need to measure various trailers, generally speaking here, all you need to know is the running and low setting heights, for low bridge clearance. Due to the height of most road bridges a vehicle and its load should not exceed a height of 5.03m. This is the normal maximum clearance under highway bridges in the UK. ii) a rearward projection exceeds 5 m extra side markers shall be fitted on either side of the projection so that the horizontal distance between the extreme projecting point of the vehicle from which the projection extends and the nearest point on any side marker from that point, and between the nearest points of any adjacent side markers on the same side does not exceed—

A projection to which this paragraph applies shall be rendered clearly visible to other persons using the road within a reasonable distance, in the case of a forward projection, from the front thereof or, in the case of a rearward projection from the rear thereof and, in either case, from either side thereof. Different manufacters seem to have different 5th wheel heights. Unless drivers are dropping them intentionally like this. be clear with no other letters, number or notices that could be confused with the height indicator. The requirements relating to loads that overhang the front, rear or sides of vehicles are set out in regulations 81 and 82 of the Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 ( C&U), as amended. This information sheet provides an overview of the main requirements, but for the definitive requirements, the regulations themselves should be consulted. Details of how to obtain the C&U regulations can be found further down this information sheet. 1. Loads overhanging the front or rear of the vehicle

Q: Why do I need to measure the height of an HGV vehicle? A: Measuring the height of an HGV vehicle is important to ensure that it meets the maximum height requirements for clearance on roads, bridges, tunnels, and other infrastructure. It helps prevent accidents caused by collisions with low bridges, overhead obstacles, or other height-restricted areas. For eg all ours are marked up at 15' 1'' but are about 14'' 6''/14' 9'' depending on suspension settings. Network Rail research shows that 43% of lorry drivers admit to not measuring their vehicle before heading out on the road. Reporting in-service defects The height of an HGV is calculated by measuring the overall travelling height (OTH) from the ground level of the vehicle, its equipment and its load. When drawing a trailer, the OTH is the measurement of the overall height of the vehicle and trailer combination, its equipment and load.

In the last 5 years, the percentage of people accessing the guide using a mobile has almost tripled (12.5% to 32.9%), so we've designed the new guide with this mind. For the purposes of this subparagraph the expression “the vehicle” shall not include any special appliance or apparatus or any part thereof which is a forward projection or a rearward projection within the meaning of regulation 81; The Chief Officer of Police for any police area may, at his discretion,accept a shorter period of notice or fewer details. So, to help you do these we've updated our guidance and published a new video, showing you what you need to do. v) it is clearly visible within a reasonable distance to a person using the road at the end of the vehicle from which the projection extends;
