About this deal

I wrote ‘Love Song’ for Mary, my wife, as a wedding present, and I put it on the album to be kind of romantic. The group released four singles and an EP – " The Only One", " Freakshow", " Sleep When I'm Dead", " The Perfect Boy" and Hypnagogic States respectively – on or near to the 13th of each month, in the months leading up to the album's release. You can sense that focus straight from the first minute, during which some wind chimes knock around in an empty void, and then the band bursts out with one of the most overwhelmingly grand openings I’ve ever heard on a pop record—a slow-motion, radiant synth figure of such scale that Sofia Coppola has plausibly used it to soundtrack the coronation of Louis XVI. Included with cassette copies of Faith was an instrumental soundtrack for Carnage Visors, an animated film shown in place of an opening act for the band's 1981 Picture Tour. Wild Mood Swings, finally released in 1996, was poorly received compared with previous albums and marked the end of the band's commercial peak.

The Cure – Disintegration Lyrics | Genius Lyrics

In The Same Deep Water was hollow and drawn out, Disintegration was carried by momentum and the reward for the attention paid to getting the sound marvellously right in this problematic room, Homesick was a dormant lullaby wending its way in familiar colours but on unsteady feet, and Untitled was meandering and flavourless.

The Cure have released 13 studio albums, two EPs, and over 30 singles, and have sold over 30 million albums worldwide. Indeed, for a while it looked like they might just pull off the miracle of making the original record’s second side if not brilliant then at least kinetic enough to pull us through. As he neared the age of 30, vocalist and guitarist Robert Smith had felt an increased pressure to follow up on the band's pop successes with a more enduring work. It’s muscular (like on the title track), wistful (“Pictures of You”), ghostly (“Closedown”), seething (“Fascination Street”), and yeah, morose, but what’s striking is how each of those qualities can reach really, really far into your gut. The album’s overwhelmingly dour mood was fuelled by funereal synths, and yielded two standout tracks: the pacey, bass-driven single Primary , and All Cats Are Grey , a hauntingly beautiful and ethereal composition, inspired by the Gormenghast novels of Mervyn Peake.

Smith, who was influenced by the acid house movement that had exploded in London that summer, released a predominantly electronic remix album, Mixed Up, in 1990. Smith’s dark ruminations of lost love and despair would transform the band from cult status to mainstream adulation, with posters of them adorning the walls of teenagers’ bedrooms across Middle America. Smith deliberately sought to record an album that was depressing, as it was a reflection of the despondency he felt at the time. In Smith’s world, even good relationships are shot through with morbid overtones, and failed ones are the end of the world; he treats both with the same resigned melancholy.Leading up to and beyond its May 1989 release, the album’s title became a self-fulfilling prophecy as the band began disintegrating. The band performed seven additional Reflections concerts in 2011, one in London, three in New York City and three in Los Angeles. Wish (1992) reached number one in the UK and number two in the US and yielded the international hits "High" and " Friday I'm in Love". The first single in the US, " Fascination Street", reached number one on the American Modern Rock chart, but was quickly overshadowed when its third US single, "Lovesong", which reached number two on the American pop charts (the only Cure single to reach the US Top 10). The first concert was at New Jersey’s Giants Stadium, with 44,000 people turning out to watch them headline a bill that included the Pixies.

We all hated the song and didn’t want it released, and time off was also very valuable at this stage. The band recorded the album at Hookend Recording Studios in Checkendon, Oxfordshire, with co-producer David M. In 1998 the Cure contributed the song "More Than This" to the soundtrack for The X-Files film, as well as a cover of " World in My Eyes" for the Depeche Mode tribute album For the Masses. The Cure, Guns n' Roses and Red Hot Chili Peppers Shortlisted for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame | News | nme. If that song wasn't on the record, it would be very easy to dismiss the album as having a certain mood.

It was their first masterpiece, a record of bleakness, infused with moments of exhilaration and beauty. The Cure are often identified with the gothic rock genre, and are viewed as one of the form's definitive bands. Songs like this aren’t organized around parts and movements, just steady repetition and emotional build.

The Cure postponed their autumn 2007 North American 4Tour in August to continue working on the album, rescheduling the dates for spring 2008.The album would power the band towards mainstream status across the Atlantic, although that wasn’t how their US label Elektra perceived it when they first heard the record. The trick, I think, is how well it serves as a soundtrack to that feeling that everything around you is meaningful, whether it’s beautiful or horrible or sublime: This is an album for capital-R Romantics, not sulkers.
