This ended up being a beautiful tale of family, love, and allowed readers to experience how even the saddest of situations can have great outcomes. Its texture, soaring colossal trees, and the lack of sky – everything hints at something menacing and ruthlessly savage concealed in its depths where only “a woodpecker drums its territorial tattoo.

Noted reasons for challenging the book include its "offensive language" and being "sexually explicit". The present day storyline centering around Sylvie, I found even less engaging than the story set in the 1970s.The characters (Rita, Sylvia and Hera) are entwined so beautifully, the mystery so rich that the story unfolded naturally and without effort.
