About this deal

This is a 'proper' hard-shell hot tub – no inflating required – and its high-quality frame is designed to last for years and years, with no worries about punctures or deflation. However, that does mean it's going to take up a lot more space to store, or it will need a permanent spot in the garden Style, size and included features are obvious considerations for buying a lazy spa and it would be difficult to buy one without considering these first. However, when it comes to the long-term usage of your lazy spa, it's worth thinking ahead... Maintenance and cleaning

I was pleased that the hot tub came with a lid, as it would be very hard to keep the water clean without it. The fact that it's inflatable also helps to keep the water warm which means the hot tub uses less energy to maintain its temperature. On days when it was colder, the water stayed warm, even when the lid was off for longer periods. The WiFi App is really handy, you can easily view the real-time pool temperature, and turn the heater, bubbles and filter on from your phone. You can also set a timer from your phone, or on the main control panel, which is useful if you want to save money. Keeping it clean is a simple case of washing the filter once a day (and replacing it once a week) and keeping the chemical levels up. Emptying is also easy, just detach the pipes and release the plug. Additional featuresSeven different colours of LED lighting set into the hot tub's inner walls allow you to fine-tune the evening's ambience. You can switch up the colour to match the mood via the wireless remote or use the auto-colour mode to cycle through the shades. Easy to inflate, this blow-up hot tub has much thinner walls than most other inflatables, which makes for more space inside the hot tub – and a whopping 1123L water capacity – that allows up to seven adults to enjoy a spa experience at one time (although we think five people ensures everyone has comfortable leg room). The spacious design is matched by a generous 180 massaging air jets. The area required of course depends on the size of the hot tub you choose; consider the circumference for the hot tub itself, plus additional access room. Filling time also doubled with the Wave, because of course the water capacity is twice the size, and that larger volume of water took a lot longer to heat meaning that running costs were higher.

The hot tub took just under two hours to empty and we were left with about an inch of water in the base. This is because the plug hole sits slightly higher than the water level, so to empty the last dregs I had to tip the hot tub up slightly so that the water level was higher than the plug. This energy‑efficient inflatable hot tub has Wi-Fi connectivity that allows you to control your hot tub from the Lay-Z-Spa app so it's always ready when you are. It looks great on our patio and its anti-freeze technology means we're likely to use it all year long, so for the price I think it's good value.

Hot tubs, chemicals & spares

A month before trying the Lay-Z-Spa Barbados AirJet, we tried the Wave Osaka 6-person Rigid Foam Hot Tub. This differs from the Lay-Z-Spa in that it's not inflatable, but has sturdy foam walls sandwiched between the liners. It’s also a lot larger, holding almost twice as much water at a 1200-litre capacity. I’m not going to lie, it’s not the prettiest hot tub I have ever set eyes on, but it’s not the ugliest either. The greige colourway is far nicer than some of the lurid blue/green portable tubs out there and the heater unit is sleekly designed. I did make sure it was positioned in the corner where it would be fairly hidden from view when looking out from the kitchen windows or sat on the patio. Is the Lay-Z-Spa Barbados worth the money? While there is a range of lazy spas available to buy, one of the biggest and best in the UK is the Lay-Z-Spa. As the country's most 5 stars reviewed hot tub brand, they provide premium inflatable spas with advanced technology, unique features and award‑winning design which helps these lazy spas stand out above the rest. Unfortunately, it's not all easy-breezy! The maintenance of a lazy spa may seem a daunting task but so long as you follow the manufacturer's instructions, it should be fairly simple.

We used the hot tub six times over the space of a month, enough time to perfect the amount of chlorine I needed to add, and we didn’t have to use any of the other chemicals at all.The only real downside is its capacity, which is fine – if still a little cosy – for two adults, but definitely starts to feel crowded with any more users. I don’t think it will suit us as much as our boys grow older and bigger, as I certainly don’t think it would be a comfortable fit for me and three 6-foot boys! Given the price and size (two adults fit comfortably, any more would be far too intimate for me), I was seriously impressed by the Lay-Z-Spa Barbados and would recommend it to anyone looking for an affordable, portable hot tub with low running costs. Being on the small side isn’t a bad thing – it’s cheaper to heat, fill and keep clean, and it’ll easily fit in a small garden without gobbling up play space. Changing the water will depend on the degree of usage and the chemical testing - if the levels have fallen out of range then the water should be changed and refreshed. There are a few key hot tub brands out there but a wide range of styles, types and sizes. Before you buy it’s important to consider which would work best for you, and your garden. This includes asking whether you’d need/prefer:
