About this deal

Before the river takes our love and carries it out to sea, I wanted to thank you for loving someone as broken as me. I know it wasn’t easy, I know it wore you down. Before the cities burn to ashes and the sky rains tears, I wanted to say I’m sorry for all these wasted years. Before our bones are no more our bones and our lips are no longer our lips, I hope you take a lover who sails a different ship. May your nights become less brutal and your mornings a little kinder, may your heart find warmth with someone older and a little wiser. This book focuses on healing the heart, soul, body, and mind. This is an essential thing to do whenever you feel heartbroken or unhappy, and the book emphasizes this very well.

I saw an angel once But she had lost her wings I saw an angel once She seemed broken of all things I saw an angel once And asked her why she was sad The angel looked at me and said “Because the world has gone mad” Well that book of poetry was quite the lovely read! Which is fitting, because it's all about love. Wanting love, having love, losing love. Wishing for love from afar, holding love tightly from up close, and all of the kinds in between. This book was done by sections, and each was lovelier than the last. I just love how this collection has been devided into 10 chapters specifically when to read each of these chapters. I’ve made a funny little habit of parking out near the bay. I like to watch the planes take off, fly overhead and disappear into the clouds. I pretend I am up there too, on my way to see you. I read the 2 and 3 part first and these to parts where cute. Sweet poems that I could relate to. BUT THE FIRST PART IS MAKING ME SO ANGRY.

Overall, this collection of poetry is pretty interesting. Peppernell is really great at writing lyrical prose that reads like the words of a love song you could hear in a number of different genres. I am always impressed by how this type of accessibility leads to a larger form of resonance. It is worth noting though, that much of what is written is fairly obvious. For instance:

I really have to say that the 2 and 3 part where cute and lovely but please don’t read the first one if you are mentally not that stabled. I just wanted you to know That I’ll never care How far you push me away Because when I told you That I would stay I meant it. You’re a little lost And a little damaged But you’re not hopeless. I know who you are I love who you are And that’s why I’ll stay So you learn to love Yourself too. It always gives me that perfect whimsical, hopeful vibe that is perfect to sleep to. Which is perfect considering the title. The poems are like my literal thoughts when I’m lying down on my bed and nearly about to sleep. Courtney Peppernell is a poet that I adore because of how well she can translate thoughts to something that everyone can read and relate to, no matter what it is really about. I found myself just smiling in certain parts <3 You’re beautiful without even trying but each time I bring you a flower it ends up dying and you don’t see how I look at you you just keep crying and the saddest part is that you’re so special but you think I’m lying You can feel all the raw emotion in every word Peppernell writes and the pure passion she puts into creating her poems. This collection is split into five parts, each one dealing with a particular theme. And as a whole, each section ties seamlessly into the next, coming together in a perfect blend that warms the heart and soul. Her poems are a series of meticulously crafted vignettes that comfort, heal, and encourage readers. With vivid imagery, Peppernell takes us on a journey that allows us to better understand, accept, and care for ourselves.

I knew what I was going to say; I had rehearsed my goodbye over and over again, but you left without a word. We get older and suddenly what we cannot have becomes just what is. Less becomes plenty and time is a fragment of our short adventure on earth." I like how each section is labeled on what you are feeling right now and what mood you are in when you read it. I have always wished there were poems books that were like this because it would be so helpful. . . and now I found one. The poems perfectly describe the idea that we won’t be happy everyday, every second - however, it is important that we tough it out because happy times will be coming inevitably.

Truth be told, I can probably go on and on about how mediocre and embarrassing this literary monstrosity is because God knows I never thought I’d ever find a poetry book that I would end up loathing more than the collections written by Lang Leav. However, there are much more important things for me to accomplish than to waste so many words on a book that shouldn’t even warrant any positive attention.

It's free verse "poetry", yes. But I appreciated it for what it was: just pillow thoughts. It reminded me a lot of the good ol' high school days when you'd be having problems with your boyfriend/girlfriend so you'd invite over your best friend for a sleepover, sit on your bed and vent to them, and they would just always know the right things to say. Is that why you play the music so loud? A beat to drown out the thoughts, sound so high you cannot think, lyrics so close to home, you don’t even blink. Your feelings are valid and real. Do not let anybody denounce them just because they do not feel the same way. These feelings do not make you weak or clingy or overly emotional. They make you strong, brave and beautiful. You are not merely made of stardust; you are the comet streaking through the sky on the way to do good and bright things.”
