About this deal

Low light proves challenging for the Poco M3 Pro 5G – you can get some usable photos in the evening, if there is a bit of light available, but in general there are more misses than hits. It's got good battery life and a decent main camera, though, so there are upsides and downsides to this handset. The M3 Pro offers the same 48MP camera as the standard M3, and you miss out on a wide-angle lens here as well.

It's worth bearing in mind that the glossy back of this phone tends to attract a lot of fingerprints, at least in the black color, so if you want your handset to be always looking its best then you're going to have to wipe it down regularly (or maybe just wear gloves whenever you use it). The additional RAM handles the MIUI 12 software also slightly better, but it is not the smooth experience you’d hope for. The device is available in Cool Blue, Power Black and Poco Yellow colourways, and the Yellow variant looks most striking among the three.

charger takes over 2 hours to fully charge the phone, and that's fine; this is a phone that need to be plugged in overnight. inch LCD panel, not OLED like you'll find in some competitors, with up to a 90Hz refresh rate (it's either 60Hz or 90Hz, you pick in the settings) for some uptick in smoothness throughout software and apps. POCO is looking to differentiate itself in the budget segment with unique designs, and that's the case with the M3 Pro as well. The M3 Pro scored 557 in the single-core test and 1733 in multi-core, and they're on par with the Snapdragon 732G-powered POCO X3 — my X3 posted a score of 550 in the single-core test and 1774 in the multi-core.

It'll do as a design approach until manufacturers figure out how to get a decent quality camera working under the screen. There's also HDR (high dynamic range) and AI (artificial intelligence) options to auto-adjust exposure peaks and troughs and to boost a given image based on what the camera believes the subject is, which can go some way to enhancing the result (or sometimes go a bit haywire, but that's all part of the fun). . We're glad that it's included here, though at this point only the very cheapest new phones don't have it, so it's not the huge bonus that it used to be. The side-mounted fingerprint scanner, face unlock, headphone jack, IR blaster, dual stereo speakers, and more are a nice addition to the budget phone. POCO is using the same side-mounted fingerprint sensor as the regular M3, and it is just as reliable in daily use.

The dedicated Night mode in the camera app tries to overcome a few issues here with better night shots and details. In terms of optics, you are looking at a triple camera setup with a 48MP primary sensor with a 1/2" sensor size, f/1. POCO is trying to do a better job with software updates, and while the brand notes that it will deliver two platform updates to the M3 Pro and three years of security updates, it usually takes its time in rolling out stable builds. The phone has global 5G bands and dual-SIM 5G, and if you're thinking of switching to a 5G phone on a budget, this is a great option.

So the Poco is not a leader in its class, and the auto-brightness seems keen to keep everything looking dim, but crank the brightness slider up a little and this screen is perfectly decent. The 'Pro' edition is a whole different beast compared to the sub-par standard M3, which is great news. It's a shame that POCO didn't do more on the camera side of things, considering the hardware and screen got a noticeable upgrade over the M3.

The M3 Pro is a totally different beast, thankfully, with a different design and far more functional internals to make for a device that, while not as far-reaching as the 'Pro' name may suggest by any means, is a solid entry at the affordable end of the market. Thankfully, the presence of 6GB RAM is something to appreciate here which means the software can be handled slightly better when compared to other MIUI devices in the segment. It comes with a triple-lens 48MP wide + 2MP macro + 2MP depth configuration, so you don't get anything in the way of ultra-wide or telephoto zoom here. The bezels around the screen are nice and thin – something even the cheapest phones can manage nowadays – and the only interruption on the front is a single punch-hole for the selfie camera to stick out of.The peak brightness of the device is set to 400nits, we had no issues with it while we were indoors, but as we moved on a sunny day, it was not the best device text or watch content on the device with the sun straight up above our head. POCO India became an independent company on 17 January 2020, [1] [2] [3] followed by its global counterpart on 24 November 2020.
