About this deal

Art Alexakis of the band Everclear has been thanked by Brookmyre inside the front cover of two of his books - Be My Enemy and The Sacred Art Of Stealing. Brookmyre has said that Sacred Art was inspired by the Everclear song 'Unemployed Boyfriend' from the album Songs from an American Movie Vol. One: Learning How to Smile. This is the song which the lead character, Zal Innez, discusses with Angelique De Xavia. De Xavia is stated by her brother to spend her evenings alone "drinking supermarket merlot and listening to that depressing Mogwai rubbish" in The Sacred Art of Stealing. The first name for Innez, as well as the inspiration for the costumes worn by his gang of bank robbers, are taken from Zal Cleminson, guitarist for The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, who always wore Pierrot makeup on stage. Parlabane is a fan of Skids and Big Country and Jasmine Sharp goes to see Twin Atlantic perform live in one of her books.

This novel explores themes of money, social status and ethical questions or beliefs, as well as the abuse of those in the advancements of medicine. Chloroform is the next great discovery in the aid of anesthetizing patients. An area that Raven is in the beginnings of exploration. Young women are being found dead all over Old Town, each having suffered similarly brutal ends. In the New Town, Will Raven (a medical student) is close to starting his apprenticeship with Dr Simpson (the brilliant and renowned). Edinburgh 1947 and medical student Will Raven has found himself apprenticed to the very famous Dr Simpson. Will is not the usual gentleman... In fact he is quite penniless and owes money to a cutthroat gang who he tries to dodge as he attends procedures with Dr Simpson. At the same time he is convinced there is a murderer targeting prostitutes and housemaids, including someone quite close to him. In such circumstances, we can save the life of the mother by sacrificing that of her pregnancy. By opening the head of the infant by means of perforating instruments, we can remove the contents of the cranium and then break down the vault of the skull, bringing away the fragments until only the base of the cranium and the bones of the face remain to be extracted by means of the crochet."What follows is a fine tale of murder and deceit, with a list of suspects to drool over. We meet old friends and enemies, and new characters would could turn out to be one, the other, or both. There are several revelations which long-time fans will love. The love-triangle between Will, Sarah and Eugenie continues to feature large, as they all struggle with their feelings. Jenny Dalziel is an Edinburgh CID officer, part of Hector McGregor's team as a DC in Quite Ugly One Morning, who becomes a close friend of Parlabane and appears or is referenced in most of his books. She is openly gay and in a relationship with a woman called Maggie who has survived breast cancer by the time of Dead Girl Walking.

All Fun And Games until Someone Loses an Eye was the winner of the seventh Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction in 2006.Ambrose Parry is the pen name of a husband and wife team ; crime writer Chris Brookmyre and consultant anaesthetist Dr Marisa Haetzman. This combination is a great one and the book is set up nicely for really interesting storylines in the future. Although not yet shown in Goodreads, I have read articles suggesting this will be a 7-8 book series and that the TV rights have been bought by Benedict Cumberbatch. What fun that will be! The story revolves around Will Raven, a young medical student, who becomes apprenticed to a renowned obstetrician, and Sarah Fisher, Dr Simpson’s housemaid, a young intelligent woman who would love to study medicine but due to her gender and class cannot. Although taking a dislike to each other, Will and Sarah end up working together when they find out that women have been found dead under suspicious circumstances. Siege Mentality, 2017 (ebook only - short story. Originally published as The Last Siege of Bothwell Castle in the Bloody Scotland anthology)

With thanks to NetGalley and especially to Canongate for the much appreciated arc in return for an honest review.Bampot Central was shortlisted for the Crime Writers' Association Macallan Short Story Dagger in 1997. It's Edinburgh, 1854, and several years have passed since the events of "A Corruption of Blood". Raven and Eugenie are married, with a son, and another child on the way. He is still working with James Simpson, but is under increasing pressure to set up his own practice. Sarah Fisher has continued her medical studies, while also assisting Simpson and his colleagues. Dr Will Raven is somewhat frustrated with family life - his wife is heavily pregnant with their second child and he is finding it difficult to relate to, and cope with, his noisy young son. His wife wants him to set up his own practice, his speciality being gynaecology, rather than be junior to Dr Simpson as at present. Raven is somewhat reluctant to do this as it would mean being beholden to her father for funding. His assistant, Sarah Raven, dearly wants to become a doctor (impossible in 1853) and Raven is sympathetic towards her.
