Heller deftly navigates questions of consent and issues of age, and Minnie makes it clear that she’s making her own decisions, even if they’re probably bad ones. But while the film’s promotional material featured its stars in skimpy outfits and the picnic-scene kiss between Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair became an early (and much-parodied) viral sensation, the film’s raunchiest moments were all verbal ones. Nonetheless, John Schlesinger’s drama was a risky, adventurous movie in theme if not content, making a mesmerising protagonist out of Jon Voigt’s gay hustler who strikes up an unlikely friendship with another impoverished loner in Dustin Hoffman’s skittish con man Ratso. But, certain reservations aside, the key to the film’s success and enduring appeal is the obvious affection in which it holds its central characters. Such a simple reading does the film’s all-round cynicism a disservice: Douglas’s protagonist is also insipid, cowardly and weak.

While everyone has had at least one sex slip-up before, these cringe-worthy-but-totally-true stories might make you feel better about some of your more forgettable sexual encounters.
